Goffers gather to begin season
After losing three of their varsity participants and gathering together their seniors and juniors to attempt to fill out the line-up, the Wawasee Golf team began its season last night against Elkhart Central, at Elkhart. Rudy Cesco, coaching his seventh season, says his crew has been looking forward to the start of the season after the ,long winter — without golf. Between showers and the resulting mud, the teams have 72 holes of qualifying in at South Shore. Seniors returning to compete for Wawasee this year are Rick McKibben, Jim Hoover and Mark Walgamuth. Rob Smith, junior, rounds out the current varsity team, which is minus one player. Cesco has a system he uses to determine the fifth man on the varsity team. The current 10 nine-hole round results of each player are compared with the best one playing that fifth varsity position. Cesco says by the end of the season the competition should be pretty tough. Last year, five players were vying for the fourth and fifth positions on the team, in the system. Cesco stresses his “B” squad, which in his years of coaching has compiled a 90-7 win-loss record. Here, he has a lot of depth, with players filling out the positions. “And that’s where the kids gain a lot of experience,” Cesco explained. "And that’s where I draw my teams from year to year.” He added that “B" team play also matures a player for tournament play. His varsity team, which compiled an 18-5 record last
