Horticultural show set on Purdue campus

A plant clinic, demonstrations, contest, speakers, and viewing will all be a part of the Purdue University Horticultural Society’s 65th annual show. Dates are April 14-16, the Purdue Armory. Viewing hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 14; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 15; and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 16. Theme of the show, which is open to the public without charge, is “The Home Horticulturist.” Several thousand people attended last year’s event. Individuals of all ages may place entries in the terrarium and dried and fresh flower contests. These items must be entered, however, between 6 and 8 p.m., Friday, April 14, at 9 and 11 am., Saturday, April 15. Prizes will be given to the top three in each category. Saturday, from 1 to 3 p.m., horticulturists will discuss outdoor home gardening, hobby greenhouses and indoor house plants. Then from 3:30 p.m. .until 4:30 p.m., several extension

specialists will be on hand for a plant clinic. During this session individuals may have their “problem plants” viewed or have questions answered by specialists. Flower designing will be discussed at a special presentation from noon until 2 p.m., Sunday. This will include demonstrations in flower design technique. Horticulturists will talk about flowering bulb care and landscape design between 2 and 3 p.m. As in the past years, exhibits will include those from commercial businesses, organizations and some facultystudent projects. A few equipment displays planned. Plants not in the central display area will be sold throughout the show and may be taken by the purchaser at that time. Plant materials in the central display area will be sold during the show but may not be removed from the area until the

“The recent announcement made in Washington provides payments for those farmers who voluntarily divert land from production,” says Phil Braman of the local Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) office.. “In addition, these farmers will be eligible for all program benefits provided under the previously announced set-aside program.” Farmers have until May 1 to sign up for the voluntary diverted acreage program. By doing so, they can receive an advance payment of one-half the total setaside payment. The size of the

payment will vary, depending on the acreage being diverted. Fanners diverting acreage will also be eligible for the target price protection, commodity loans or purchase agreements, and disaster protection. It was also announced that wheat producers who wish to graze or chop their wheat prior to heading could receive a minimum payment of 50 cents a bushel on the acreage grazed or chopped off.
