Spanish-speaking persons find church service they understand
Spanish-American, Spanish and persons with Cuban origins have found a church service they can understand in the area. Because the service is done entirely in Spanish. The Spanish service began in 1976 in the Grace pible Church, Syracuse. Dr. David Haifley, pastor of the church, offered the use of his school facility after daughter Kathleen attended a Spanish service in Milford. “And it’s worked out real well,” Dr. Haifley commented. “We’ve enjoyed having them.” The non-denominational, fundamental, independent Baptist service is held each / Sunday, with Sunday School at 10' a.m. and the 11 a.m. service presented in Spanish by Rev. Rafael Rios. Rios came to this county in 1960 from Cuba and has been a missionary in Mexico for three and one-half years. “I really think the greatest call a man can have is preaching the gospel,” Rev. Rios said. He set his goal on establishing fundamental, independent churches after graduating from Moody Bible College, Chicago. As a missionary pastor, he holds Bible classes WednesdaySm Fort Wayne, Thursday in South Bend, Tuesday and Saturday in Warsaw and in Chicago on Sundays. Conditions demonstrated the need for the services, the C minister said. Marital, drug and child disobedience problems existed among the people. “We believe that the Gospel of Christ is the only way to strengthen their lives,” Rev. Rios explained. A handful of-families, numbering between 20 to 40 people, attend the services regularly. They come from an area bordered by Warsaw and Goshen, Milford and Syracuse. “There is a great barrier,” the former missionary said. Many of these people learn a little English and lose their Spanish. Often, he said, he must repeat phrases three or four times in the service before they are comprehended. “I believe it’s a country within,” ( he added. f Rev. Rios said the service was '

family problems and finances. “I try to encourage them also to iead good Christian books,” he said. Occasionally, attenders of the Spanish service and the regular service get together at the church for services when Rev. Rios interprets in both languages. And all-day fellowships are held with members of each service attending. “Many of these people have been mistreated,” Rev. Rios said, and are skeptical about how they will be received by English speaking persons. The Grace Bible Church in Syracuse is a temporary home for the service, the minister said. He hopes to locate the service in Milford in the future, if a facility can be obtained. Call to prayer... is set Tomorrow (Thursday) the United Methodist Women of Milford will hold an annual observance, “The Call to Prayer and Self Denial.” The program will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the home of Mrs. Max Duncan. Major events of the observance include the “Quiet Day,” and description of the mission projects for which a special offering is given. Each woman who takes part is asked to give for others by denying herself and to pray. Through prayer, she experiences a spiritual oneness with planners, mission workers and those served in churchrelated ministries. The offering will be used in two areas. In the United States, the off ering will be used for Mission Institutions, maintenance and improvement of women’s division owned property. Overseas, the offering will be used for “Children and Youth in Today’s World.” The service for the “Quiet Day,” “Be Thou My Vision” was written by Jean Hawk Troy. The service is organized around the hymn, “BeThou My Vision.” The theme is hunger — physical, spiritual, emotional and intellectual hunger. The Milford unit will participate in an “Agape Meal” luncheon with representation of foods from poor nations of the world.
