Flotilla promotion plans finalized
A small, but enthusiastic group of Syracuse merchants finalized plans for a Flotilla promotion over the Fourth of July week end in a meeting last night (Tuesday). Linda Crow, Star Store, Flotilla committee, reported a carnival with tent uptown should be held Friday and Saturday, June 30 and July 1. The Flotilla parade on Lake Wawasee is set for Sunday, 2, and merchants thought the Monday after would not be a good day to hold a special promotion. There is a possibility of getting the Syracuse United Pentecostal Church’s tent for a minimal fee, she reported. Sherri Keim has a list of organizations and service groups interested in space in the tent and surrounding areas. For Friday, it was decided to try and get some form of entertainment similar to last year such as baton twirlers, organ player, plays from the Enchanted Hills Playhouse and Miss Indiana. Saturday would be the day for the tent and rides uptown. No Parade Mrs. Crow said her committee decided against holding a parade through town because of the work involved. She felt if some other organization was interested, it could organize one. She also suggested merchants should have set hours advertised and the merchants association should charge a flat fee of $5 to service groups wishing to participate in the tent. Hours will be from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday. Donna Conder, Rose Garden Beauty Salon, reported on the Flotilla. She sits on the Flotilla

committee with the Chamber of Commerce. Tentative schedule is as follows: June 1 — dance; July 2 — Flotilla parade; July 3 — Cromwell fire works; and July 4 — Syracuse fire works. A lengthy session followed on advertising. Tom Utley and Nancy Curtis, advertising committee, came up with three proposals — an eight page tabloid distributed in the newspaper; a 12 page tabloid; and a quality brochure which would be a business directory for Syracuse. Colonel Joseph Gray of the Chamber of Commerce said the chamber is planning on coming out with some sort of brochure of its own. Merchants decided to go along with the chamber, separate from Flotilla advertising. A suggestion on other forms of advertising such as a business biography where merchants would give a little history about themselves to a paper along with an ad or having a week end getaway to Fort Wayne were discussed. Merchants decided to advertise in a tabloid. Utley nd Mrs. Curtis will canvas merchants asking for support. How big the tabloid is will determine on the support received. Syracuse, suggested the association go to merchants and ask for a flat fee for a budget. James Plummer, president of the association, said, “I think it’s a super idea because we would have a budget, but we have to be cautious that we don’t come into conflict with the Chamber of Commerce. The merchants association is in fact the retail arm of the chamber.” Plummer added, “It’s the chamber’s responsibility to put fine points about Syracuse outward and to bring industry in. Our job is to keep them here.” Merchants agreed if the chamber and associaton work together, there should be few problems. Utley, Plummer and Caskey will go out at a later date and inquire about support for dues to the association. Boats for the Flotilla parade were brought up. Possibilities of having the association or individual businesses sponsoring a boat were discussed. Anyone with a boat who would like to donate it for the parade, contact Plummer. ‘ Plummer announced the Syracuse-Wawasee Rotary Club is sponsoring the Sounds of Christmas Light, a group of young people under the sponsorship of Varner Chance, Sounds of Hope, to perform at Wawasee High School June 10.
