Walleye for Wawasee Indiana’s annual walleye stockings have grown from three million fry in 1970 to nearly 17 million fry in 1977. This year, a total of 44 million fry are needed to stock Indiana lakes. Wawasee Lake will be stocked with 7.8 million walleye. Approximately half of these fish will be obtained from federal fish hatcheries and states outside Indiana. An intensive effort will be made to produce the remainder at Indiana’s new walleye hatching facilities at the Cikana State Fish Hatchery near Martinsville. As in the past three seasons, an effort will be made to collect walleyes from the wild to supply egg needs. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has been actively pursuing a program to bring good walleye fishing to the Hoosier state. To date a total of 72.5 million walleye fry have stocked in 16 lakes throughout Indiana. An additional 300,000 walleyes have been stocked as 13” fingerlays.
