WITH THE appearance of spring-like weather coming our way this week, we can look for things to open up in the Lakeland area. Known for its summertime businesses, April 1 usually marks the opening of businesses in the area. It coincides with the return of “snowbirds” from Florida. Following a severe winter and icy roads Saturday and Sunday, our only comment: It’s about time.' THE TOWN of Syracuse may soon advertise for a transfer of funds from the electrical fund to, the gas fund. Reason: Their gas heating bill on the new city hall is over and above what has been budgeted in the heating (gas) fund. The city received a bill from NIPSCo for gas for a 40-day period (January 25-March 6) for $1,255.51. According to clerktreasurer Betty Dust, the amount paid a year ago for a 57-day period (January 6-March 4) for gas was $179.85. Mrs. Dust said the entire new building had to be heated for fear the sprinkler system would freeze up. But as much as anything, the spfawling new city complex is not a well insulated structure and doesn’t lend itself to the conservation of fuel. So . . . town board members Darrel Grisamer and James Tranter are going over the building with a fine tooth comb to see where windows can be replaced or heat shut off. Mrs. Dust says, “With only $4,900 appropriated for the entire year for gas, you can see where a bill like this leaves us.” The city hall’s light bill is not included here. Mrs. Dust says lights are figured in with the overall city light bill, which includes street lights. GROWTH IN THE local real estate community continues. Announcement will soon be made that Ron and Becky Boyer, r 1

They hope to join handkdme Ric Schaekel May 1, having passed their broker’s exam Feb. 25. Louise Rex* a West Noble teacher, and Bob Riegsecker of Kimmel joined the Beaty firm in November, and Arlene Dellinger of North Webster has been a parttimer there for two years. Also associated with the fast-growing firm is Dick Littlefield.' 1 And standing in the wings is Ric’s wife Margaret, working on her license. FORREST (“Bud”) and Mary Lou Smith, r 2 Syracuse, are new disciples of the SLENDER NOW reducing system. “And it works for us,” says Mary Lou, who claims to have lost four pounds in her first week on the program. Jovial Bud, at 5’6”, wants to rid himself of 45 pounds, and Mary Lou, at 5*3”, 40 pounds. They have a powdered milk shake for breakfast and lunch, mixed with orange juice or milk, vitamins. For the first three days evening meals consist of a chef’s salad, then they graduate to a small hamburger paddy and salad. They’re both so excited about the program, it’s contagious. COLLEEN Bryant supplied this column with information that her hubby Sherman was s’B”. Married 28 years, Sherm berated pretty Colleen for not knowing — “after all these years” — that he is actually 5’7”. ENTREPRENEURS Gene and Marise Smith (Marise’s Town and Lake Shop, Wawasee Village) have opened their fourth retail outlet, this one at 120 South Anderson St., Elwood. It’s known as The Town & Country Shop, and opened March 17. Others include outlets at Lakes
Village Shopping Center, Warsaw, Anderson and, of course, the popular Syracuse store. Operating the Elwood store are Vivian Rose and her daughter Sandra Ball, both of Elwood, summer residents at Lake Wawasee. , Gene and Marise also own half interest in an 18-hde public golf course at New Haven, known as Haven Hurst Golf Course. Don’t look now, but Gene has turned up with one of those curly hair jobs. He says, “I really prefer a butch haircut, but that’s not the thing right now.” LARRY MELLOTT was back at his desk at Thornburg drugs on Monday following a hernia repair job on March 6. SYRACUSE HAS had its share of realtors and seems to be getting more of them. The latest is Wawasee Realty, opened March 22 by Jim and Phyllis (“call me FiFi”) Louden, located in the former Old and New Shop in Wawasee Village. Phyllis recently received her broker’s license. She sold $2,000,000 worth of real estate locally while associated with Beer & Associates in 1976 and $1,700,000 in 1977. The handsome couple bid to do well in their new enterprise. John Kramer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kramer, Syracuse, spied a Syracuse license plate on a vehicle in San Antonia. He asked Mrs. Paul Stoelting if she was from ‘Cuse and found she was indeed. Kramer is stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas and attended high school with Mrs. Stoelting’s husband, Paul. Paul Stoelting is attending law school in San Antonio. CAROL MILLER, of Pickwick Papers, located uptown, is selling all her merchandise and going out of business.
Most of her merchandise is going to other stores in the area. It is not known for sure what her plans are for the future, but word has it that she and her husband are going into the restaurant business. LOOK FOR a new music store to open uptown next to Syracuse Hardware and the former Cow Palace. Owner of this new establishment is Tim Robie. Word has it that he will be selling musical instruments and sheet music. LOOK FOR the new Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant to open soon. Construction began on the foundation of the building a few weeks ago. A sign by the site, located cm SR 13, notes the restaurant should be open for business around April 1. MARGARET TEGHTMEYER, of the North WebsterSyracuse hardware family, has sold her spacious North Webster home and is sparring with the, idea of building a duplex on the next door acreage. She has a lake home in this area, just in case she has a change of heart and wants to live in the Syracuse area. RAY GRUMME is working with the real estate division of the U.S. Postal Service to come up with a plan where Grumme could remodel his Wawasee Village hardware building for a new local post office facility. Grumme says at (me time he had a 90 per cent chance of reaching an agreement with the Postal Service, but that this chance has diminished to “about 40 per cent.” He said the Postal

The so-called “Dirty Dozen,” a group of enterprising men of the area, purchased the two-year-old property August 16, 1976, from Norman Wiese for $246,000. New owners of the property are Mr. and Mrs. Tom Leonard. The deal was consummated last Thursday and the Leonards moved into the home on Friday.
