Altman sentenced to 6 years for January 31 bank robbery
Randal Oliver Altman, 22, 812 South Front Street, Syracuse, has been sentenced to six years with the Indiana Department of Corrections for his part in the January 31 robbery of the State Bank of Syracuse, Village Branch. Altman, who entered into a plea bargain agreement on a charge of robbery, was credited for 52 days he spent in the Kosciusko County Jail. Under the terms of the plea bargain, the state agreed to refrain from recommending four years for aggravating circumstances and to refrain from objecting to judgment which would subtract four years for mitigating circumstances. The offense carries a nonsuspendable sentence which means that Altman received the minimum sentence of six years in prison. He was sentenced last Thursday by Superior Court

Judge Robert Burner. Altman, along with Randy Dee Hapner, 19, r 4 Syracuse, were apprehended 14 minutes after the robbery when Altman, wearing a wig and sun glasses, entered the bank and threatened bank tellers Mildred Savage and Paul Pritchard with a .22 caliber sawed-off rifle. He then escaped with $4,580 and fled on foot to a waiting car one-quarter of a mile away. Edward Napier, r 2 Syracuse, observed Altman leaving the bank and radioed in the alarm on his CB radio. He was able to give a description of the vehicle and chased the two until police converged on the scene. Hapner, “driver of the vehicle, has been charged with conspiracy in the offense. terest and that McCormick, Beer and Jansma recover the sum of $110,260, also at eight per cent interest. The suit stated that the defendants and all persons claiming from, under or through them be forever barred and foreclosed from and that the real estate be sold in accordance with Indiana state laws to satisfy the plaintiff’s judgment and costs. In the event the mortgaged land fails to sell for a sum sufficient to pay and discharge judgments, together with interests and costs, the balance remaining unpaid shall be made up out of the goods and chattels, land and tenaments of the Elders. 180 per cent water rate increase okayed Milford Junction received an okay from the Indiana Public Service Commission for an across-the-board hike of 180 per cent in water utility rate. “Probably the first thing we’ll do is pay off some of the debts we’ve been accumulating,” says Dr. T. A. Miller, Milford Town Board president. The rate was applied for to make the utility a paying service. For the past two years, the finances for the water system have come out of the bonded interest fund. An additional $21,843 in revenue is expected to be generated by the new rate annually. “And in time, there will be some money accumulated for replacements and repairs,” Dr. Miller explained. He said any changes in the water system would have to be made gradually. Residents will not be subject to the new rate until the June 1, billing. At that time, the flat rate will be $10.50 plus tax, paid by the average user. “I would say half of our users are average or under,” said Mrs. James Brooks, town clerk-treasurer. Booked on charge Ronald Lynn Gillum, 33, of North Webster, was booked at the county jail last week on a charge of battery (body injury). He was released on his own recognizance.

MOVING EXPENSE TAX DEDUCTIONS
Prior to 1970, your moving expense tax deduction was limited to the cost of transporting your household goods and family transportation costs for the move (including food and lodging). Little by little, other expenses of making the move were added to the deductible expense list. Now they have been liberalized even more with the 1976 tax reform bill. Effective in 1977, here is how the new scoreboard reads. You can deduct up to $3,000 for the cost of real estate commissions, mortgage costs ond , similar items incurred in buying or selling your home or settling a lease. Os this $3,000 total — one half (or up to $1,500) — may be deducted for expenses incurred for pre-move house-hunting
