HONORS FOR TRACY — Wawasee’s Tracy Rinker is shown above in action during the school’s last home gymnastics meet last Thursday against Concord and South Bend Adams. Tracy won first all around with 32.65. The WHS sophomore is the defending state champion in all around competition. She placed first Thursday in vaulting with 9.2, first on the bars with 7.6 and first on beam with 7.95. She was second in floor with 7.9. Gymnasts finish season
By KELLI PRICE The Wawasee Warriorette gymnasts finished their season last week with two home meets. Tuesday they met Leo and Thursday the girls competed against Concord and South Bend Adams in a three-way meet. The Wawasee optional team remained undefeated. Tuesday the optional Warriorettes claimed victory over the previously undefeated Leo team 87.80 to 73.20. Tracy Rinker took firsts in each event and all around (33.5). Her scores were vaulting 8.65, uneven bars 8.7, balance beam 7.35, and floor exercise 8.8. Heather Beer placed second all around (29.5) with seconds in vaulting (7.9), beam (7.1), and floor (7.55), and a third in bars (6.95). Nancy Amos took third on beam (6.75) and floor (7.25). Kathie Yoder placed sixth in vaulting (5.45) and fifth on bars (5.35). The WHS intermediate team lost to Leo 56.25 to 43.95. In vaulting Wawasee’s Esther Morris took second (6.55), Boody Brewer came in fifth (5.35), and Kelli Price placed sixth (4.35). On the uneven bars Brewer took first (4.4) and balance beam finished with Price in third (4.0) and Rose Easley in fourth (3.75). In floor ex Brewer placed second (5.7), Price again claimed third

(5.65), and Michelle White came in sixth (4.2). Wawasee’s beginning team claimed victory over the Leo gymnasts 50.40 to 39.25. Sandy Lozano took first in vaulting (5.0) with Jenny Boyer taking second (4.1) and Daniell Neibert placing third (4.05). On the bars Neibert came in first (5.7), Stephanie Baumgartner second (5.25), and Boyer claimed fourth (4.55). Judy Knudsen led Wawasee on beam with a second place (5.35), Boyer placed third (5.15) and Tonda Davis was fourth (4.5). Boyer was the Warriorette’s only tumbler and she placed first in floor exercise (6.75). Boyer also placed first all around with a total of 20.55 points. Wawasee’s last home meet was Thursday against Concord and South Bend Adams. The optional team defeated these teams 87.95 to Adam’s 75.05 and Concord’s 23.75. Sophomore Tracy Rinker again claimed first all around with 32.65 points. Rinker also took firsts in vaulting (9.2), bars (7.6) beam (7.95), and a second on floor (7.9). Freshman Heather Beer placed second all around (29.15) with seconds in vaulting (8.7) and beam (6.7), a fourth on the unevens (5.7), and a first in floor exercise (8.05). Junior Kathie Yoder tied for fifth in
vaulting (7.55) and placed second on bars (6.5). Junior Nancy Amos claimed third in floor ex (7.5) and seventh on beam (5.2). Completing their season the intermediate team placed second to Adam’s 64.85 with 51.10. Concord finished with 46.45 points. In vaulting junior Kelli Price placed second (7.1); and sophomores Boody Brewer (5.8) and Rose Easley (5.55) came in sixth and seventh. Brewer’s 4.6 on bars gave her second place and a 4.3 on beam placed her fifth. Price claimed sixth on beam (3.6) and Easley took seventh (3.35). In floor exercise Price finished second (5.85), Brewer ended up fourth (5.65) and Easley’s 5.3 gave her seventh. Brewer placed third all around with a score of 20.35. The beginning level of Warriorettes lost to Adam’s 68.45 and Concord’s 59.9 with a score of 46.1. Wawasee’s vaulters placed freshman Sandy Lozano in seventh (4.9), sophomore Daniell Neibert in eighth (4.7) and senior Jenny Boyer in ninth (3.55). On bars, Neibert took fifth place (5.35), Boyer sixth (5.05), and sophomore Stephanie Baumgartner came in ninth (4.8). Judy Knudsen, junior, took fifth on balance beam (4.45), with Boyer and freshman Tonda Davis tieing for seventh with scores of 3.85. Boyer’s floor exercise gave her a fourth with 5.6 points and an all around total of 18.05 for third place in the all around. Wawasee optional gymnasts finished the regular season with a 7-0 record.

Basketball teams receive honors
Junior varsity and varsity girls’ basketball players at Wawasee High School were recognized for their efforts Monday night. Freshmen JV and varsity cheerleaders also received recognition. Bea Carvajal, senior, was selected most valuable. Out of 16 categories varsity coach Jim Webster uses in determining the best players, she led with 14. The most improved award went to Lin Ummel. senior. Teresa Carpenter, senior, was given the coach’s award, or plus award. This is a statisticians award with Carpenter receiving 146 plus points. Free throw percentage award went to Teresa Welborn, junior, who shot 71 per cent. Athletic blankets, the highest athletic award at Wawasee, were also presented. Marcia Carpenter, girls’ sports director, said these blankets involved “a lot of blood, sweat and tears.” Receiving blankets were Carpenter, Carvajal, Lorene Spearman and Ummel. Harry Brinkman selected for APBA hall of fame Harry Brinkman, Greenwood, son of Mrs. Vern Brinkman, r 4 Syracuse, was one of 20 racing drivers out of 4,000 selected for the 1977 American Power Boat Association Hall of Fame. The presentation of the highest honor available to a boat racing driver was made March 10 in Detroit, Mich. In 1972, Brinkman joined the modified outboard category in the APBA. He helped write its rules and was the first technical chairman. Under the APBA banner since 1972, he has won the CMR national championship and national high point championships, set competition records for the one and two-third and one and one-quarter mile courses and still holds all three competition records in CMR. He is also the 1977-78 technical committee chairman for modified outboards.

Team statisticians and managers were also recognized. Receiving certificates were: Jo Hepler, junior, manager, varsity; Martha Salazar, senior, manager, junior varsity; Pam Custer, senior, stats; Charlotte Tatman, junior, stats; and Linda Shock, freshman, stats. The varsity team played 16 games during the season, finishing with a seven win, nine loss record. Several school records were also broken. In one game against Northridge, the players scored 85 points and against Goshen in another game, scored 71 points. The old record was 70 points. The team was sectional run-ners-up, scored the most free throws ever and had five individual records won by Carvajal. Need Hard Work Tony Clouse, coach of the junior varsity girls’ basketball team, said his team performed well, but could have done better. He said, “Our girls remind me, talent wise, of junior high and below level. Maybe we can catch up with Warsaw and some others with hard work.” The team played 12 games, winning five. Laurel Speicher rolls 624 series Laurel Speicher of r 1 Milford rolled a 624 series during league bowling of the Tuesday Afternoon Ladies at Syracuse Tuesday. Carrying a 152 average, Laurel had games of 232, 187 and 205.
