Leesburg Successful Farmers welcome two new members

By KEVIN EVEREST The Leesburg Successful Farmers held their February meeting at the Methodist Church in Leesburg. Holly Rookstool brought the meeting to order. The club welcomed two new members: Jill Kissell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kissell, and Chip Stookey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rick Stookey, all of Leesburg. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were given by Tiffany Galloway. Songs were led Kristy Templin entertains for Senior Homemakers Members of the Senior Homemakers met in the home of Kristy Templin on February 21. Lynn Kaiser, president, called the meeting to order. Karen Haney led the American Pledge and Penny Hoover led the 4-H pledge. Kristy Templin gave the secretary’s report and members paid their dues to the treasurer, Karen Haney. Sally Cline, adult leader, discussed the record books and some new and old business. It was announced that Share-the-Fun contest will be held April 24. Susie Hoover gave a reading and Penny Hoover led the group in games. A song was led by Laura Haney. The club welcomed five new members who are: Kay, Lori and Cindy Kammerer, and Melissa and Melodie Tom. The next meeting will be held in the home of Penny and Susie Hoover on March 21. Refreshments were served by the Templins.

It was announced that Kerry Rookstool is the assistant leader. He has been in 4-H work for 13 years, all of them with the Leesburg Successful Farmers. Seven members of the club made a trip to Echo Valley at Kalamazoo, Mich., on February 18. There they went ice skating and tobogganing. Four guests and three adults were also along. The meeting was adjourned and Tiffany Galloway served refreshments. The next meeting will be March 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the Leesburg Methodist Church. In the fifth and sixth grade division, Rosa Stewart, fifth grade, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stewart, finished first. Second place went to Mark Walker, sixth grade, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Walker. The third place finisher was Bob Addair, sixth grade, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Addair. First place winner in the seventh and eighth grade division was June Brown. Second place winner, overall and in this division, was Steve Alford, seventh grade, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Alford. Third place finisher, in this division and overall, was Angie Laub, eighth grade, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Laub. The county spelling championships will be held in Warsaw March 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. each night. Fifth and sixth grade winners will meet March 13, while the seventh and eighth grade winners will pair off March 14. ! Amy Owens, a sixth grade student at the North Webster school, won the elementary spelling bee championship for .a In old Irish legend, the cats are ruled by a king cat the size of an ox.

1978. Amy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Owens of r 1 Leesburg. Amy is 12 and was the alternate runner-up in the 1977 contest. The winning word was “forte.” Runner-up was Troy Graham, 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur L. Graham of r 1 Warsaw. Troy is in the fifth grade. He missed the word “feud” which Amy spelled correctly. She then spelled “forte” to win the contest.
