(Continued from page 1) visiting team for the event. Fry stated Franklin had won the Indiana Small College women's championship for the second year in a row and was headed for regional competition in West Virginia. Adrian College was the home team for the event. Fry commented on the fact Adrian had won the Michigan Small College women’s championship in 1977 and was runner-up this year. Adrian too is on its way to West Virginia for the regionals. Adrian The Victor Most fans in attendance had come to see the young women from this area play. Few really cared at the start of the game who won or who lost — both teams picked up fans as the game progressed. Brouwer and Cunningham were starters for Adrian while Warren started for Franklin. Schumm entered the game a short time after it started. All four saw considerable action during the evening. Judy Warren scrambled as much as ever and teamed up with Kathy Stricker of Memphis to be the playmakers for the Franklin Grizzlyettes. Even though the young lady from Claypool had an off night, she managed to hit fa* a total of 10 points. Stricker was high for the Grizzlyettes with 17 points. Barb Brouwer didn’t let the hometown fans down as she gave an excellent exhibition of dribbling and ball handling as she moved the basketball down the floor time after time. One Adrian player, Jane Faulkner of Tecumseh, Mich., brought a chuckle to fans as she blew a bubble as she dribbled the ball towards her team’s basket. Schumm’s nerves showed as she wasn’t even close to the basket on the first two free throws she attempted. She later sunk a beauty to make up for her first efforts. The half time score: Franklin 33 — Adrian 45 Exciting Half Time The half time activities were as entertaining as the game and provided many people with a new insight of women’s sports. When the Franklin and Adrian players were introduced, prior to the game, each was presented with a carnation. During the half time festivities members and coaches of the 1978 Warsaw High School girls state basketball champions were introduced and presented with carnations. Notation had been made earlier of the fact Judy Warren had been a member of the 1976 state basketball championship team and had won the honored mental attitude award. Heritage High School’s Carol Blavelt, Fort Wayne, 1978 mental attitude award winner, was introduced and presented a carnation. Also intrbduced were Lorene Spearman, Wawasee’s two-time state track champion; Mrs. Mark (Jennifer Cox) Smith, an allevents state gymnastics champion; and the current allevents state gymnastics champion Tracy Rinker. Rinker, a Wawasee sophomore, was joined by junior Nancy Amos, freshman Heather Beer and junior Kathi Yoder in presenting a gymnastics exhibition. Franklin College started a come back during the first minutes of the second half but could never get closer than three points, 52-55, before Adrian players were told by coach Nancy Walsh to, “move up your defense,” and Adrian pulled away once again. The final score: Adrian College 75 — Franklin College 66. Fans began early in the game to watch Barb Brouwer as she took the ball down the court time after time, passed it to teammate Jamie VanArsdalen (many began to compare her with the famous VanArsdale brothers of Indianapolis) who would find the mark and score fa the Bulldogs. VanArsdalen hit fa a total of 27 points to lead all scorers. Brouwer, who was hurt during the second half, added an additional eight points to her team’s efforts. Cunningham added 10 and Lai Spotts, whom many avid basketball fans considered as the player to watch, scored 20 points for the Bulldogs. $ 1,600 damages in 2-vehicle collision A total of $1,600 damages were incurred in a two-vehicle collision involving a Syracuse driver on CR 300E, three miles northeast of Leesburg, at 1:08 p.m. Saturday, March 4.
