ousted the Warsaw Tigers in what proved to be a close, hard fought battle that went all the way to the final buzzer. Final score: 55-52. Senior Kent Trobaugh, who held the Tigers’ sharpshooting Scott Franklin to 18 points during the evening, scored the first basket of the tournament. The Warriors’ lead was shortlived, however, as Warsaw soon found the mark too. The lead was up for grabs in the first quarter. Warsaw was on top 12-10 at the gun. The second quarter belonged to the Warriors as they hit the hoop for 18 points during the eight minutes of play. The Tigers only scored 10 points in the stanza and Wawasee took a 28-22 lead to the dressing room at half time. It all began when Phil Stichter, who lead the Warriors’ scoring attack with 16 points, tied the game at 14 all. Mark Simpson gave Wawasee a 16-14 lead a few seconds later. Then it was the Warriors’ game the rest of the quarter. Senior Bryan Smith kept Wawasee in the game during the third stanza. The team came back on the floor with difficulties in hitting the basket, Smith being the lone exception. One minute and 29 seconds had passed before Smith connected for the team’s first bucket of the half. The score: 30-24 Wawasee. Smith hit again at 4:11. The score: 32-28. A few seconds later he added two more. Stichter hit two three throws at 3:13 to become the first Warrior besides Smith to find the basket in the quarter. The score: 36-32. Warsaw, however, was not about to give up. The score was knotted at 38 all. A foul by Worth Packer and a basket by Steve Bradford, a Warsaw senior, put Warsaw on top 39-38. Packer then hit for Wawasee to turn the tables again. The score: 49-39.

Fans were on their feet most of the final stanza. Stichter hit, then Warsaw scored. Lantz hit for two points, then received a pass from Smith and sewed again to give the Warriors a three point lead. At 3:37 Warsaw took over with a 49-47 score. Smith tied the game at 49 all a short time later. Clay Kreicker hit a four shot with 1:46 remaining to give Warsaw a 50-49 lead. Simpson put the Warriors on top once again, only to see a Warsaw basket put the Tigers back (mi top. Doug Vanderkolk fouled out of the game, sending Packer to the charity stripe. Both shots found their mark. Wawasee took a 53-52 lead. The final seconds of the game seemed as though they would never end. It took over six minutes and several time outs to play the final 32 seconds. With seven seconds remaining Wawasee held a 53-52 lead. A Warsaw foul sent Bryan Smith to the free throw line and Warrior fans held their breath. Smith hit the first shot (an almost sure tie) and then his second shot (an almost sure victory) to give the team a three point lead. Warsaw sent a football pass to the far end of the floor in a last ditch attempt to get the ball in the basket. The shot was missed. The clock ran out. The Warriors were the victors. Warsaw’s Franklin lead all scoring with 18 points. Stichter paced the Warriors with 16, Smith added 13 and both Lantz and Packer added nine. Warriors stopped by Zebras
The Warriors from Wawasee went down to defeat, 50-48, last Friday night at the hands of the Rochester Zebras. Wawasee got the tip but couldn’t take advantage of it and it was Rochester that got the first basket of the game. Both teams seemed cold as neither hit the basket again for several seconds. Rochester finally scored, taking the score to 4-0. „ With 5:35 remaining in the quarter Mark Lantz, a Wawasee junior, scored the first two points for the local team. Then the teams seemed evenly matched as they began to trade baskets. The quarter ended with the Zebras on top 12-8. Rochester scored the first basket in the second quarter. Valley trounces host Trojans
The opening tip of the first game of the sectional on Friday went to Tippecanoe Valley. Seconds later Tim Conrad had the ball down court and in the basket, giving an indication of what was to come. In what was to become the only game of the tournament where fans could see the outcome early in the game, Tippecanoe Valley couldn’t do anything wrong. Everything went right for the Vikings. Everything seemed, on the other hand, to go wrong for the host Trojans from Triton. Conrad hit his second basket of ' the night to go ahead 4-0, then the team was out front 6-0 and 8-0. Two minutes and 41 seconds ticked off the clock before Triton took time out and switched from a man to man to a zone defense. A total of three minutes and 20 seconds had passed before the * Trojans could get their first basket of the night. them the ball at almost every turn. Valley, out to win the sectional, did not miss a basket until the clock had reached the 1:31 mark. However, the missed shot drew a foul and Jeff Leckrone made his first free throw and his second to keep the team’s scoring attack going. The first quarter ended with Valley on top 27-8. Triton seemed to try a little harder during the second quarter. They hit the basket more times and upped their score, however, it wasn’t enough to stop the fired-up Vikings and the half ended with a 46-22 score. Both teams seemed to cool off during the break. No one scored the first minute and 15 seconds. Triton made that first score on a steal to break the ice. Triton was outclassed all the way and even the advantage of playing on their home court was of little, if any, help to the Trojans. ' The third quarter ended with Triton on top 62-34. The final quarter was also a lopsided scoring effort with the Vikings winning the game 89-58.
