Warriors stopped by Whitko 62-58

By MARK STIFFLER The Wawasee Warriors saw a five game winning streak go down the drain as they bowed to the Whitko Wildcats 62-58 at Whitko Saturday afternoon. Both teams began the game very cold as they couldn’t get anything on the board for a while. Whitko got hot first and sprinted to a 9-2 lead. The Warriors got the shooting touch and pulled to within 13-11 at the end of the first quarter. The second period was, for the most part, uneventful. Whitko maintained its lead except on one occasion when Mark Lantz connected to give Wawasee’s first lead to the visitors at 21-20. It looked like it might be the end of Warrior hopes in the early part of the third quarter. The Wildcats pulled to a 37-29 lead, their largest margin of the game. Wawasee came roaring back, however, as the visitors ripped off 10 unanswered points to take a

Warriors trounce West Noble

By MARK STIFFLER The Wawasee Warriors came from behind once again as they romped over the West Noble Chargers 81-65. The game remained close throughout most of the half. In the first quarter West Noble streaked to an 18-11 lead and held on for an 18-15 lead at the end of the period. The Warriors came fighting back in the second quarter, which proved to be a see-saw quarter. Wawasee finally took the lead at 23-22 on a basket by Bryan Smith. The lead was short-lived, however, as West Noble took the lead right back. After four more lead changes the Chargers pulled to a 32-27 lead and held on for a 32-29 halftime margin. Phil Stichter put Wawasee up again early in the third period with a bucket. West Noble took the lead right back but after four more lead changes the Warriors took the lead for good with about 3:20 left in the third quarter. Unemployment claims down AD types of unemployment insurance claims for the week ending February 18 registered decreases from the previous week when blizzard related claims were still being counted. Last week’s total was 70,870, down 5,127 from the week before, according to the Indiana Employment Security Division. John F. Coppes of the division said the figures are misleading because layoffs resulting from the coal strike are too recent to show up in these tabulations. Recalls in various industries and the phasing out of extended benefits also were contributing factors to the decreases reported for last week. Coppes said all regular claims numbered 67,579 and special unemployment assistance claims were 2,761. The year-ago total for all claims was 103,563.

Carpenter, felt the Warriorettes performed very well but she indicated much improvement can be made in several areas. The girls themselves see their weaknesses and are prepared to get them out before sectional time. Sectional will be held at Wawasee on March 14 and 15. The next meet will be at home against East Noble. Beginning, intermediate and optional teams will compete.
