What is Easter?

Webster says Easter is "An annual Christian festival celebrating the resurrection of Jesus, held on the first Sunday after the date of the first full moon that occurs on or after March 21." But, what do area youngsters say about Easter? Wanting to know what the youngsters of this area felt about one of the church's two most important holidays, we sent reporters out to question several members of the younger generation. They came back with the following answers which should give area pastors and Sunday School teachers the basis for a sermon or lesson or two in the weeks between now and March 26: The first youngster to be asked the question, "What is Easter," was a charming kindergarten girl who took but a minute to think before responding that it was, "When the Easter bunny comes." An adult, standing nearby was quick to ask what Easter had to do with the church and almost immediately' came the reply, "My Mommy hasn't told me yet!" An older youngster in the room asked for and received permission to tell the youngster the correct answer. His reply was the one we were seeking. A third grade girl told us Easter was "Happiness."

Seeking more information we asked what kind of happiness and were told "A holiday." Going farther we ventured to ask, "What kind?'' Her answer, "A special one." Our next question was, "What happened?" Her answer, "Jesus got off the cross." Our next third grade girl paused a long time before giving her answer. She then took us by surprise as she said, "I can't think, It's not Jesus' birthday though!" Another youngster, whose age we forgot to obtain, told us at first he knew but forgot. Then, as he was about to leave he said, "Jesus died on the "It'swhen Jesus arose — first he died, then they put him in the tomb, then he arose again!" explained Vicki Holderread.

cross — he came back alive." Our first question to a Milford first grader brought the comment that, "It's kinda hard!" So we , added the words what happened and learned, . • HEX * "It's when Jesus arose," said Karen Benning. "Jesus died." Try as we would this youngster would not or could not finish it and tell us what happened then. A Syracuse first grader told us, "The Easter Bunny comes." And, his third grade brother said, "It's when the Easter Bunny comes around and gives you stuff!" A Milford second grader was very quick to admit, "I don't know." While another Syracuse first grader said, "I forgot." And, one youngster simply looked at us and replied, "No."
