Warrior wrestlers bow in semi-state

By MARK STIFFLER The Wawasee wrestling team, finishing'probably its best season ever, sent four wrestlers to the Fort Wayne North Semi-State Saturday. The four Warrior grapplers were unable to get past tough first-round opponents and were eliminated from the tournament. Sectional ticket l sales scheduled

Sectional basketball tickets will go on sale Friday, Feb. 24, from 8 a.m. until 12 noon and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Wawasee High School bookstore. Hal Hammaker, met Ford of Warsaw and was unable to defeat the Tiger as he lost 9-4. Wawasee’s only senior in the Semi-State, John Beer, is the 185 pound wrestler. Beer met Burdsall of Elwood and lost a close 4-2 verdict. Doug VanLue, Wawasee’s heavyweight wrestler, took a regional title into the action Saturday but VanLue had the roughtest going of any of the Warrior wrestlers. Doug was pinned by another Warsaw grappler, Degaetono, in 3:42.

Warriors top Northfield 69-63

By MARK STIFFLER The Wawasee Warriors won their 12th game of the season as they edged the Northfield squad 69-63 in a thriller at Northfield Friday night. The Warriors began slowly but were able to gain the lead in plenty of time for the victory. In the opening period the hosts raced to a 16-11 lead. Wawasee got loosened up from the long bus ride in the second quarter. The visitors outscored Northfield 23-13 to take a 34-29 lead into the dressing room at the half. Ren Week end games to end season The West Noble basketball game will be played at West Noble Friday as scheduled. Fan buses will leave at 5:45 p.m. from Milford and North Webster and 6 p.m. from Syracuse. Tickets will be sold at the gate, for $1.25 for students and $1.50 adults. Due to the energy pinch, the Whitko game has been rescheduled for Saturday afternoon at Whitko. The junior varsity team will play at 2 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 3:30 p.m. Buses will run for this game and are to leave at 12:45 from Milford, 1 p.m. from Syracuse and 1:15 p.m. from North Webster. All tickets will be sold at the game for one dollar, students; and two dollars for adults.

Walter Drug Co. team wins LWBA tournament

The Walter Drug bowling team won the handicap division of the eighth annual Lakeland Women’s Bowling Association tournament held last week at the bowling alley south of Syracuse. Rolling a 2743 series, the team consissted of Ellen Slabaugh, Linda Garza, Tammy Brake, Carolyn Richards and Virginia Showalter. Scratch division of the team event was won by Bud’s Bar with a 2362 series. Bowling on this team were Iva Scott, Nellie Spurting, Donna Rigdon, Helen Taylor and Jo Ann Reed. Second place team handicap was won by Bud’s Bar with 2725 and Thornburg Drug received third place with 2710. Helen Taylor and Jo Ann Reed rolled a 1097 to win the scratch division of the doubles event. First place handicap doubles was captured by Joyce Castro and Janice Ryman with 1200. Second (dace in the handicap doubles event went to Helen Taylor and Jo Ann Reed with 1175. Yvonne Coburn and Elaine Stichter won the handicap doubles thrid place with 1165. Rolling a 577 scratch series, Lynda Eastman captured the scratch division of the singles event. Sarah Zarse had a 640 series to win the handicap division of the singles event. Second place handicap singles was won by Luann Gardner with 638 and Sharon Gilbert with 634 placed third. Gymnasts compete in three-way meet

By KELLI PRICE Last Wednesday, at the Wawasee High School gym, Wawasee, Jim town and Elkhart Central gymnasts competed at the beginning and intermediate levels. Wawasee’s beginning team placed second to Jimtown and the intermediate Warriorettes came in third behind first place Jimtown and second place Central. Wawasee’s optional team performed exhibition. Jimtown’s beginners scored 63.4, Wawasee 56.8 and Elkhart Central scored a close 56.65 points in beginning competition Wednesday evening. Wawasee’s results in vaulting were: Sandy Lozano first (5.9), Jenny Boyer fifth (4.25), and Daniell Neibert ninth (3.6). In uneven bars Neibert claimed Wawasee’s only first, tieing with S. Bender of Jimtown (5.9), Rhonda Hickman took fourth place (5.8), and Stephanie Baumgartner was fifth (5.7). Balance beam placed Jenny Boyer in fourth (5.65), Judy Knudsen fifth (5.1), and Tonda Davis came in seventh (4.6). On the floor. Boyer tied for fourth (5.75), in the beginning compulsory exercise and Hickman took seventh (4.55). On the intermediate level, Jimtown again claimed top honors with 62.2 points. Central edged Wawasee out for second place with scores of 48.9 to 48.8.

Wawasee’s vaulters placed second with Kelli Price (7.0), a fourth for Boody Brewer (6.4), and seventh place went to Rose Easley (5.1). Brewer also competed on the uneven bars for a placing of fourth (2.5). In balance beam Easley took third (5.75) and Price came in fifth (3.4). In the final event, floor exercise. Price claimed second (6.9), Brewer took eighth (5.0) and Easley came in ninth (4.75), The Warriorette optional team, minus ill Kathie Yoder, scored 73.4 points in its exhibition performance. Tracy Rinker claimed all the firsts. Rinker scored: vaulting 8.7, bars 8.85, beam 7.75, floor ex 8.35, for an all around total of 33.65. Heather Beer placed seconds in vaulting and bars and thirds in beam and floor. Beer’s scorqs were: vaulting 7.4, bars 6.3, beam 5.5, and floor exercise 6.8, for her all around score of 26.0. Nancy Amos placed seconds in beam (6.2) and floor (7.55). Wawasee’s records are now optional 1-0, intermediate 2-2, and beginning 1-3. The next meet will be another three team match consisting of Wawasee, Elkhart Memorial and Plymouth. The meet will take place at the Wawasee gym, February 21, at 7 o’clock. The Warriorette optional team will also compete Saturday, Feb. 25, in the Portage Invitational meet.
