ers in the United States today and many of them have become unwitting junkies, turning to just about any pain relief drug they or their doctors think will help. But now there is an alternate solution to stop pain. Rapidly gaining in popularity is a non-invasiv£ device that eliminates the use of drugs and produces no known side effects. This solution is the transcutaneous electronic nerve stimulator (TENS), an electrical device that prevents pain impulses from reaching the brain. The medical application of electricity has a long and generally respectable history. As early as 43 AD, a Roman physician named Scribonius Largus used electric fish to help cure the pain of gout and migraine headaches. Early transcutaneous electronic nerve stimulators had the disadvantage of being bulky, heavy to wear and often produced a noxious sensation at the electrode sites. » Three years ago, a mechanical engineer, Thomas H. Thomson, and an electrical engineer, Michael E. Halleck, both married to physical therapists, developed the Staodyn TENS which weighs only six ounces, is the size of a package of premium length cigarettes and does not produce any side effects. _ The device has successfully controlled acute and chronic pain resulting from phantom limb, arthritis, cancer, bursitis, spinal discs, neuralgia, shingles, surgical trauma, fractures, migraine and tension headaches.
