It Happened ... in Syracuse

1 YEAR AGO, JAN. 26,1977 The greater Syracuse community was saddened early this week with word of the passing away of Eli Lilly of Indianapolis and Lake Wawasee. Barry Hayden, assisted by his brother Tom Kell, entertained with magic for 46 children attending a story hour at the Syracuse library last Wednesday afternoon. Using several of the youths as “helpers,” the show was termed a huge success with the children. Mary Jo Pelikan, Syracuse, has recently joined the sales staff of Todd Realty. A native of the Syracuse-Lake Wawasee area, she has been engaged in the real estate business since 1975. Bob Diehl wants to know if Paul Levemier is late or early, in as much as he still has his Christmas decorations up at his beautiful Lake Wawasee home. 5 YEARS AGO, JAN. 24,1973 Cathy Olson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul H. Moore of 222 North Shore Drive, Syracuse, has completed her work toward a bachelor of science and registered nurse degree from the Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Benson of Syracuse were guests of honor Sunday afternoon at a 25th wedding anniversary open house in theßenson home. Their three children, Janet, Gail and James were hosts. Rick Vanloningham taken to KCH after truck hits tree Richard Vanlaningham, 28, r 2 Milford, was treated at the Kosciusko Community Hospital on Thursday after his truck veered off North Hepler Street in Warsaw and hit a tree. Vanlaningham was treated for a cut to his lip and a scrape on his head. The Milford man was traveling north when the truck slid sideways for 144 feet, veering off the road, striking the tree. / Warsaw city patrolman Fred \Heady charged Vanlaningham with driving under the influence of intoxicating beverages and operating a vehicle with an expired license. The truck was reported as a total loss. Briefcase stolen A briefcase was stolen last Thursday night, Jan. 19, from the car of Wen Sroufe, parked in the parking lot at Plaza Harbor, Syracuse condominiums. Inside the briefcase were some Sroufe Manufacturing tax papers. County police are investigating.

Worth Packer in accident in Goshen Worth Allen Packer, 17, r 1 North Webster, was involved in a two-vehicle collision in the 2500 block of South Main Street in Goshen at 1:25 p.m. Friday. Packer drove his 1973 Ford pick-up into the rear of a stopped 1973 Plymouth operated by Reginald B. Blackmer, 37, of New Paris. According to police, damage was not extensive. Several items taken from man's jeep Jack Dever, r 2 Runaway Bay, Syracuse, reported several items were missing from his 1970 jeep, parked in front of his apartment early Friday, Jan. 20. Missing were two briefcases containing business records valued at SIOO, a man’s snowmobile suit and a 23 channel CB radio worth SIOO. Snowmobile is reported stolen A 1975 model snowmobile was stolen from the driveway of Don Galloway, r 2 Leesburg, CR 300E. The theft was between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, as reported to police. The snowmobile was apparently loaded onto a pick-up truck, backed onto the driveway, reported County Patrolman Richard Monk.

Jan Widup, a student at Indiana university spent his midterm vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Widup, at Milford. 24 YEARS AGO, FEB. 4,1954 Mr. and Mrs. Roy Treesh went to Mineral Wells, Texas, where they met Mr. and Mrs. John Hildebrand, Plymouth, who had gone there previously. The two couples are now touring Old Mexico. Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Miller on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Gardner and son, Kenneth, of Fort Wayne and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Knisley and children, Judy and Ronnie, of South Bend. Mrs. Gardner and son remained a few days while Mr. Gardner is at Indianapolis. Unemployment claims up Unemployment insurance claims statewide totaled 71,392 last week, 2,342 more than the week before according to the Indiana Employment Security Division. John F. Coppes of the division said regular and extended benefit continued claims increased due to previous layoffs in various manufacturing and construction industries. Regular initial claims decreased by 742 to 12,380 as fewer significant new layoffs occurred. • All regular claims were 2,166 more at 61,400 and extended benefit claims were 1,098 more at 7,080. Special unemployment assistance claims were 914 fewer at 2,878, he said. Joe Hartsough injured as car hits pole Joe Hartsough, 30, of Syracuse, was injured in a traffic accident at the intersection of US 33 and CR 40 in Goshen at 8:34 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21. Hartsough received bruises and abrasions of the forehead. He was taken to Goshen Hospital for treatment and later released. The mishap occurred when the accelerator on Hartsough’s vehicle stuck after he attempted to brake for traffic ahead. The vehicle then skidded 84 feet into a utility pole. Damage was set at SBOO to Hartsough’s truck and S3OO to the pole.

60 YEARS AGO, FEB. 7,1918 Mrs. Wm. Nickler and little daughter Rosalie, of Middlebury, came to Milford cm Friday afternoon to visit her son Forest Nickler and wife. Many of the farmers around Milford are having their down timber and much that is green, chopped into wood, and are finding ready sale at three dollars a cord delivered. We are all pleased to know the farmers are willing to manufcture their down timber and not to wait for a higher price that will never came, and if so, not until the wood has spoiled for fuel.
