First Sled-A-Thon was 'fantastic'
The first annual Sled-A-Thon, hosted by the Lakeland Snowmobile Club of North Webster, was held last Saturday and Sunday in North Webster and on Lake Wawasee. Dick Mitchell, club member, said the event was “fantastic.” “We had a real good turnout,” Mitchell went on to say. Over 1,000 snowmobilers from Indiana, Michigan and Illinois turned out for the two-day snow fun. Mitchell said he was expecting more than 2,000 snowmobilers, but due to the severe storms in southern Indiana, quite a few snowmobilers couldn’t make it to North Webster. Money To Heart Fund All monies raised during the Sled-A-Thon will be going to the heart association. Mitchell says he hasn’t received the figure on how much money was raised yet; he said it probably won’t be released for a few days. To go along with the Sled-A-Thon, which was sponsored by the Indiana Snowmobile Association, the Lakeland club held a winter carnival with poker runs, treasure hunts and a giant torch light safari around Webster Lake. Mitchell says the safari was “quite a sight,” with more

than 100 torch bearing snowmobilers traveling around the lake. Mitchell added the poker runs and treasure hunts were also popular. The club member said during the two-day event, there were no official complaints registered with the sheriff’s department. He added that there were, however, some minor disturbances. The first Indiana snow queen was also crowned Saturday night in Camelot Hall. Rachael Parks of Fat Wayne was named the winner with Tracy Adair, from the Lakeland club, named run-ner-up. Mitchell said the Sled-A-Thon was so successful, North Webster will be hosting the second one next He said the Lakeland club is already making plans for the event which is going to be “even bigger and better.” LEESBURG MAN IS ARRESTED Lee Edward Ratliff, 36, of 208 East Prairie St., Leesburg, was arrested over the week end for driving under the influence of intoxicating beverages, public intoxication and false registration, his second offense. He was released on S3OO bond.
