Pastor-counselors using TA techniques "The pastor has always been a counselor," said Rev. Phillip Frew, pastor of Saint Andrew's United Methodist Church, Syracuse. Rev. Frew said it is no surprise the pastor is the first person people turn to, believing he can help, or refer them to someone who can. The Syracuse pastor serves as the Area Director of Pastoral Care and Counsel for the Indiana United Methodist Church. In this capacity he counsels pastors and their families and trains pastors •In counseling. Transactional analysis is one technique used in counseling, the pastor said. "I think the big surprise with TA (transactional analysis) is that it's one type of counseling that's very Christian and very acceptable to churches," he added. Transactional analysis is a breakthrough in psychiatry explained in "I'm Okay, You're Okay," by Thomas A. Harris, M. D. "It has given a new answer to people who want to change rather than to adjust, to people who want transformation rather than conformation. It is realistic in that it confronts the patient with the fact that he is responsible for what happens in the future no matter what has happened in the past. Moreover, it is enabling persons to change, to establish self-control and self-direction and to discover the realtiy of a freedom of choice," Dr. Harris says. "The nice thing about TA is that it makes you your own psychiatrist," Rev. Frew said. He said it teaches people to claim their birthright as worthy persons, because, "God doesn't make junk." TA also helps people handle problems. TA explains a person's personality as P-A-C, or parent, adult and child states. Each state is within a person, emerges to dominate the behavior for periods of time, and is used to explain the behavior states of an individual. The parent is everything recorded by the individual of what his parents do and say. The child is a record of internal events, the feelings and thoughts of an individual. And the adult is data resulting from the individual attempting to find what is different about life from what his parent and child have accumulated. The analysis of the states and a person's behavior are used in counseling along with the P-A-C being used to analyze situations and communication between individuals. Transactional analysis was accepted into the

pastoral community in 1967, Frew said. He is a member of the Indiana Transactional Analysis Association and the International TA Association. He has earned credentials in TA through courses and events of the association and has trained in Indianapolis. Rev. Frew is presently enrolled in Saint Francis College, Fort Wayne, continuing his education. Periodic courses in TA are offered at Saint Andrew's United Methodist Church. The need for counseling continues to rise, the pastor said, as reflected in the increasing divorce rate, crime rate, abortions and unemployment. No family is spared from encountering some of these problems or their fall out, he added. Counseling is for individuals and families. "And counseling is for all ages of people," Pastor Frew said. Some of the types are premarital, marital, divorce, personal and life crisis. Along with the types of counseling there are differing degrees of emotional problems. Not all pastors are trained in counseling, Rev. Frew said, yet others are equipped to deal with severe problems not requiring hospitalization. "The church cares about all persons, members and non-members alike," the pastor said. "And any pastor is willing to help. At Saint Andrew's, no one is refused help for monetary or any other reason. "At times, we all need somebody. And counseling techniques, no matter how good, don't heal people," Rev. Frew said. "People heal people."

Faith explains the meaning of knowledge and wisdom

tsiie. n the surface, many words in our language seem to convey the same meaning, and yet there is often a subtle distinction between their exact definitions. A good example of this is the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is mainly the accumulation of facts, figures or whatever; whereas a major function of wisdom is to provide a restraining influence upon our rash impulses, by

pointing out the disadvantages of which we would not otherwise have been aware. Throughout the Bible are many statements that clarify this subtle difference, and the wisdom gained at the Church of your choice will show you when it is safe to proceed, and when to apply the brakes to your impulsive actions; thereby preventing disastrous resets that without the benefit of wisdom would have been inevitable.
