Eighty-four-year-old Rev. Phillips not thinking of retiring yet

"No," says George Phillips, pastor of the Syracuse Church of the Brethren. "I'm not thinking of retiring yet. I think that's one thing that keeps me alive." The 84-year-old paslor from New Paris says people comment on his good heath. "And I think it's due to the fact that I haven't refired," he explained. Rev. Phillips has begun his 61st year in the ministry, while serving the Syracuse church during almost the last three years. He has had pastorates in Ohio, Illinois and Elkhart, the latter one for 15 years, before he "retired." During his four-year retirement, he preached in 30 churches in the area. Then he assumed his present duties in the Brethren Church. The congregation of the church held a special day to mark the pastor's 60th year in the ministry. On November 6, 1977, special morning services were held, followed by a carry-in dinner. In the afternoon there was a program about the pastor. He spends about three days a week taking care of business of the church. "Well," he commented, "I don't do much except make them try to- realize their responsibility (to their Lord and to deepen Christian convictions.)" He preaches each Sunday and has delivered 3,756 sermons,; and goes calling. The three-day work week is suitable. "That's enough - at my age, I mean," he said. "Well, I like the people here," the pastor said. The congregation is a small one of about 100 people and has had up and down periods. "It's hard to get it back where it once was," Rev. Phillips added. "Os course, I enjoy church work; I enjoy preaching very much." Those around the Goshen-New Paris area have dubbed him "The Walking Pastor." In good weather, he can be seen walking wherever he goes. "I don't drive around New Paris if the weather's fit, to go somewhere," he said. When he walks, the distance is usually two miles or more. Last Sunday, he said, before * daylight he had his brisk walk before coming to church. Rev. Phillips walked further in 1977 than when he was a farm boy around Goshen, he said. He estimated he walked a total of about 900 miles last year. "I suppose I cook more healthfully than the average housewife," the pastor, said. His diet contains a lot of vegetables and he makes no pastry. He organic gardens a small patch for his use.

jr-" I -A AJI ' ■ 1 Not only does he spend time working for the church and taking walks, but other things ask for his time. "I do a lot of reading, if I have time," he said. Religious books, history and biographies are read. "I've been told I should do some writing," Rev. Phillips added. He has done some writing for the national Brethren paper and has only written about six sermons, the remainder being prepared, but not in full. "I'm a good attender," the Goshen native offered. "I attend about everything that comes along." Last summer, he went to nine conferences and retreats. He began his ministry at the Rock Run Church, southeast of Goshen, 60 years ago. The pastor graduated from Manchester College in 1917 and later attended Bethany Bible Seminary, Chicago, 111. He married the former Gertrude Schwalm, who passed away five years ago.
