Milford pastor owns antique communion set Rev. Everett Owens, pastor of the Milford United Methodist and Concord United Methodist Churches, posesses an antique communion set, its mate now in a museum. The pastor was serving at the Methodist Church in Neche, North Dakota, from 1948 until 1956, where he used two unusual communion sets. “I’ve never seen anything like it anyplace in all my life,” Rev. Owens said of the set he has. Each set has a wooden tray and cover, "holding 35 glass communion glasses. The congregation, consisting of Methodists and Presbyterians, would receive the communion quarterly and on World Wide Communion Day, the first Sunday in October. The sets were made by the LePage Individual Communion Cup Co., Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Patents were obtained in the United States November 5,1895 and January 21, 1896 in Canada. “I suppose they stopped using it about 1960. ” the pastor said of the two sets. He heard from friends in Neche about the usage and non-usage of the sets. “The younger minister didn’t like to use it,” Rev. Owens explained. Each glass is held in the tray by a.cutout holder, with a small lip at the bottom. “So, they put it up in the attic,” the pastor said of the set he now has. A couple from the church visited Rev. and Mrs. Owens in Milford, Mr. and Mrs. Henry weiss, and were asked about the sets. The couple returned to North Dakota and inquired about them. The church council approved of the one set going to the Owens and the other one was placed in the county museum there. The set arrived in Milford before World communion Day, 1976. Mrs. Owens recalls sitting in church on communion day, “it was interesting for me to be in back of the church and hear them say what’s that up there for?” Hie newer sets are made of chrome or silver, with holes and glasses on the outside of the tray being larger. Rev/Owens isn’t sure why the sets are currently made that way. Rev. Owens doesn’t remember seeing a communion set like the one he now has, in use when he was a boy in Sidney, Neb. Since the set was made in Canada, he believes it was given to the church by a family. The church was not too far from the Canadian border and some families came over the border just to attend church. ANTIQUE SET — Rev. Everett Owens, pictured at right, pastor of the Milford United Methodist Church and Concord United Methodist Church, possesses an antique communion set, unlike those used today. The set was used for quarterly communions and on World Communion Day.
