Here’s another old photo of Syracuse brought into us by John Emmert, r 2 Syracuse. This one shows North Lake Street. Again, Emmert isn’t sure what the date on this one is. Many thanks again, John, for bringing these pictures to our attention. STUDENTS AT Wawasee High got a lesson in community concern when they participated in the Penny Pitch co-ordinated by the National Honor Society, under the guidance of NHS advisors Philip Fawley and Roberta Powers. ■ By putting out four canisters in the school (one for each high School class), an ardent class competition ensured that brought in nearly $2,500, for the purpose of purchasing groceries for corporation needy families. , Monies collected by each class were counted at day’s end and announced, thus heightening the class competition, with the seniors claiming honors for best performance. * Then, on Wednesday, Dec. 21, NHS members distributed 41 bags of groceries throughout the area. Bags were in different sizes, depending upon the size of the families receiving the largest. TALL, HANDSOME Billy Pipp, son of the Bill Pipps of 806 So. Front St., Syracuse, is a young man to watch. Bill will be remembered as a stellar Wawasee High School football star who went on to LU. to make a name for himself in the Big Red lineup. Later he went with the Dallas Cowboys, but was cut during early practice. It was at this point that Bill decided to find his home in the business world. He went with Bristol-Myers, the multi-national conglomerate firm to work with the company's Houston, Texas, base outlet. Now we hear the company is transferring him to New York city as a district sales manager, with his new charge effective January 1, this year.

JET, THE lanky, graceful Greyhound owned by Jim Wilson of South Front Street, Syracuse, has become a fixture in the Syracuse community. Usually Jet strode along Jim as he bicycled around the community, or followed him on the golf course with loyal obedience. Well, Jet is with us no longer. At 14 years of age he is considered an “old timer” in the canine world, and the years have taken their toll. He was quietly put to sleep on Christmas eve by his master when it became apparent that he could not recover his health. He was Jim’s constant companion, and, needless to say, will be missed. IT WASgood news to Ralph D. to be named to the SIOO,OOO Plus Club of Franklin Life Insurance Co., for whom he is an agent. He qualified for the honor, based on outstanding personal sales for the month, providing clients with over SIOO,OOO in permanent life insurance. The firm has assets of over $1.9 billion and over sll billion of insurance in force, making it one of the largest insurance companies in the world. AS WE hear it: The “Moonies” were in town late last week, selling 25 cent candy bars for whatever they could get. Several paid SI.OO each for the average-size candy bars. Moonies were reported to have visited the community several weeks ago. FRIENDS OF 3ack Vanderford are urging him to show a little more diligence around the license branch now that he’s “just hired help.” Jack gave up the branch managership the first of the new year with Roxanna Hadley now in charge. ANOTHER AREA newspaper reported a rare American Bald Eagle having been seen on the shores of Winona Lake during the past week, adding that there are reportedly less than 200 of the birds remaining in America. The item also noted that residents of Winona Lake reported seeing the Eagle devour several wild ducks at the Water’s edge. Bob Deahl is willing to accept this item as further proof that he saw an Eagle on Lake Wawasee some weeks ago, noting that it well might have been the same bird. PHYLLIS LOUDEN was in Florida and Meyer Maidenberg was in Las Vegas early this week.. Our luck as we tried to capture a photograph of either of the two receiving their new personalized license plates. Guess what they were: Phyllis had simply Fi Fi, a name she fondly answers to, and

Meyer had Grandpa. EVER TRY to sew with a blinking Christmas tree light? That’s what Jane Grady, of Grady Farms, r 2 Syracuse, had to do when the light on her sewing machine went out on her. She said she just went over to the Christmas tree and took a clear light off. The only problem with this simple solution was that it was a blinking light.
