Traditional seasonal images surround us

By REV. KENNETH SARRAZINE Saint Martin De Porres Each year about this time we pause to put to rest the old year and make plans to start all over again in the year ahead. All about us we see the traditional images of this season — Father Time and the New Year’s Baby. Another year of our lives has come to its inevitable end. We have so very much to reflect on. The joys and sorrows -4 successes and failures — resolutions kept and resolutions broken, we think them over. We learn what we can from each, put them aside and prepare to enter the New Year with renewed vigor and determination. We enter the New Year filled with hope and determination to succeed. Those New Year’s resolutions we make each year map out our hopes and desires to pursue and achieve the goals we have selected in the year ahead. The vision of our Christian Faith, however, adds a divine and eternal dimension to our passage into each New Year and ultimately into our passage into eternal life with Our Heavenly Father Our New Year’s Baby is Jesus — Son of Mary and Joseph — Son of God — who became one of us in Bethlehem to lead us safely home to Our Heavenly Father. Our New Year's experience is the full Advent-Christmas Season and not the mere passage of a single midnight hour There is far more hanging in the balance than a hoped and planned for better year ahead. Annually we rehearse and reapply our efforts • to join our lives to the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Our Lord and Savior The Father Time of our New Year is the Christian season of advent. Our,preparation covers the four Sundays before Christmas We review our most recent efforts to live in friendship

with God and our fellow men We reassess our present relationship Our Heavenly Father and our neighbors We prepare to renew our efforts to enter into a closer relationship with the Christ Child bom in Bethlehem. Through the Christmas Season and the year ahead we strive to join our lives to Jesus' life, death and resurrection. We know that in doing so each year we are rehearsing for our own passage into eternal life Our New Year’s Resolutions are religious in nature, spiritual in content and eternal in scope. Mere earthbound and temporary plans and hopes fade into insignificance. Eternal life with God is the all important goal of

the true Christian. Jesus' life, death and resurrection mark out the path to be followed. Jesus is truly* our way. truth and life. It is our Christian determination to follow Jesus through this life, through the doors of death to eternal life. Let faith give the new year a good beginning

Ebde’ve just begun a brand new year, And resolution time is here; Yet good intentions disappear And vanish overnight. But nonetheless it’s not too late To do the things that now await; And if you don’t procrastinate, You’re bound to see the light. So just resolve that, come what may, You’ll go to Church next Sabbath day; Because there is no better way To start the new year right! —Gloria Nowak
