Winter pond care

It’s not easy to be a fish in a farm pond during the winter months in Indiana. You have to depend on someone scraping snow off the surface of the pond to allow sunlight to penetrate the ice and assure an adequate oxygen supply through photosynthesis. Yes. it’s difficult to be a fish. Fishery biologists from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources explain that when ponds are covered with snow no light can penetrate the ice to the acquatic plants on the pond floor Without the release <rf oxygen

from the photosynthesis of these plants, fish in the pond suffocate, causing winter-kill. Also, without sunlight, the plants themselves may die. and the oxygen supply is depleted even more by their decomposition. The best way to prevent these severe wintertime oxygen depletions is to simply scrape the snow off the ice, say the fishery biologists. This allows sufficient sunlight to penetrate the ice, insuring adequate oxygen production through photosynthesis.
