Warriors down Concord in first NIC game
By MARK STIFFLER The Wawasee Warriors came out of the gate fast as they streaked to a M lead. Concord controlled the opening tip and nothing else went right for a while. Wawasee went on to a 69-62 victory. Senior guard Bryan Smith led the Wawasee charge with three steals in the early moments. He also contributed eight of the first 10 Wawasee points. Concord got down to business and came back to trial by only 16-14 at the end of the first quarter. In addition to Smith’s eight pointe in the quarter Worth Packer scored four as did Mark Lantz. Smith went right to work in the second period by scoring a three point play to increase the Wawasee lead to 19-14. The Warriors padded their lead to 2316 during the next four minutes. Wawasee swimmers win two more
By KELLI PRICE The Wawasee swimmers and divers again topped their opponents this week. Last Tuesday the girls beat Mishawaka Marian and the boys defeated Rochester. On Saturday, both teams traveled to New Prairie to claim two victories again Tuesday, Nov. 29, at home, the Warriorettes went against Mishawaka Marian It was a coed meet as the WHS guys went against Rochester's boys on the same evening Both Wawasee teams topped their competition Last Saturday, Dec. 3, both WHS teams swam against New Frame for another co-ed meet This was the last showing before sectional of the 1977 Wawasee girls' swim team. Both teams again brought home success in winning their contests The Warriorettes beat the New Prairie team 115 to 57 Wawasee captured all 11 of the first places and set two new school records The record in the 50 yard freestyle was broken by Boody Brewer and the new diving record was set by Nancy Amos Brewer, a sophomore, swam her race in :27 5. Junior, Nancy Amos’ diving record is now 221.95. Both records were broken by the previous holders Amos' record also brought her a blue ribbon as did Brewer's. Brewer also won the 100 freestyle and helped Lin Ummel, Darsee Staley and Teresa Carpenter win the 200 medley relay. Staley also won the 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke Carpenter also claimed firsts in the 100 backstroke and the 200 individual medley Laura Kroh was the

the half Concord’s Mike Hartford was whistled for a technical foul. It was only the first of three he would get in the game. Mark Lantz missed one and one free throw attempt. Phil Sticbter, however, was able to convert on one of the two technical free throws to give Wawasee a 28-22 lead. The score at halftime was Wawasee 34 Concord 28. Mark Lantz gave Wawasee a nine point lead at 37-28 with a three point play early in the third quarter Wawasee increased its lead during the next couple of minutes. Concord came back, though, to pull within 51-48 with 1:30 left. The Warriors added a couple more points to their lead by the end of the third quarter. Concord refused to give up in the fourt period. Wawasee stretched its lead to as many as seven points just to have the Minutemen come charging back
other big winner taking firsts in the 200 freestyle, the 500 freestyle, and partial credit is due her as she swam with Carmen Bryant, Lorrie Morgan, and Lisa Meek for a first in the 400 freestyle relay. The girls finished their regular season meets 10-5. Coach Peterson has a team to be proud of as several school records were broken and many personal goals were attained. Hopefully the Warriorettes will do well in their sectional beginning Thursday, Dec. 8. and with luck we’ll see some of the girls competing in the state meet on December 16 and 17. WAWASEE VS. J.V. Warriors pounded by Concord
Bv MARK STIFFLER The Wawasee High School J.V. basketball team kept close to Concord's Minutemen for the first half of Friday’s game but then ran into a cold shooting streak in losing to Concord 53-39. Wawasee jumped out to the early lead in the first quarter as the Warriors scored on the tip play. Concord finally got a point on the board on a free throw at 4:45 after a Kevin Smallwood foul. The scoring remained even
to get as close as 63-60 with 1:58 left in the game. Shortly after this Mike Hartford got his second and third technical fouls. He was ejected following the third one. until there were 49 seconds left in the period. Concord drew even for the first time at 10-10. The score was still tied, this time 1212, at the end of the first quarter. Wawasee went out in the second quarter and took the lead again and they didn’t lose it until there were only 2:00 left in the half. Concord tied the game and then went ahead 26-24. The Minutemen extended their lead to 32-27 at the half. The third quarto* was the one that put the game out of reach for Wawasee. Concord only scored 10 pointe in the period. It still was more than Wawasee scored. The Warriors didn’t score in the quarter. The Minutemen had a comfortable 15 point lead at the end of three periods. Rob Smith scored Wawasee’s first pointe of the second half on a hoop with 4:50 remaining. The scoring was pretty even the rest of the way as the Warriors wet only able to gain one point on Concord. Kevin Smallwood led Wawasee with six points. Jay Kaiser, in a relief role, added five. The Warriors go after win number three at Warsaw Friday.

Even with outstanding playing by these two the Warriorettes lost 36 to 51. Scores by the quarter were: first, Wawasee 5 and Rochester 12; second, W-18 and R-24; third, W--28 and R-33; and finishing the game was the total of W-36 and R--51. The Wawasee team shot 34 per cent in field goals making 16 of their 47 shots. In free throws, the Warriorettes made 4 of 10 for a 40 per cent. Rochester made 21 out of 54 attempted baskets, 39 per cent and nine of 12 free throws scored for a 75 per cent. The junior varsity Warriorettes lost a close game 16 to 18. Leading scorer for WHS was freshman Debbie Lechlitner. Leading rebounder was sophomore Karen Patton. The Warriorettes bettered the Rochester team in shooting percentages but they still fell behind in scoring by two points. Wawasee had a 22 per cent in field goals, shooting 28 and making six. In free throws, 4 out of 14,16 per cent was Wawasee’s total. Rochester scored on 8 of 49 shots, 16 per cent, and made only two out of 14 free* throws for a seven per cent, scores by the quarter were: W-3 and R-8 in the first; second, W-9 and R-8; third, W-10 and R-U; ending the game was the final score of Wawasee 16 to Rochester’s 18.
