Warriors edge Carroll in season's opener
By MARK STIFFLER Wawasee's Warriors held close for three quarters of Friday's season opener with Carroll and then they took charge to beat the Chargers 62-55 on the Wawasee court. The game was close from the beginning with Carroll holding a slim 12-10 lead with 2:00 left in the opening period. The score was tied at 14 with only a few seconds remaining when senior center Worth Packer connected on two free throws to give Wawasee a 16-14 lead at the quarter. In the second quarter Wawasee led by as much as 22-16 but let its lead shrink away under a Carroll rally to lead 29-26 at the half. The coaches and fans got a little upset early in the third quarter after the official called an over-and-back on Wawasee. Fortunately for the Warriors no technical fouls were called and no harm was done. Meanwhile the Chargers had come back and they led 44-43 at the buzzer ending the third period of play. Wawasee began to take charge at the fourth quarter whistle. The home team erased the Carroll lead with an 8-0 spurt at the beginning of the quarter to take a 51-44 lead. The Chargers couldn't pick up any ground because with about 3:00 left Wawasee sent into its four-corner offense. Two time-outs later when the buzzer sounded Wawasee had a 62-55 victory. Bryan Smith, last year's leading scorer, led the Warriors with 16 points. Most of Smith's points came in the fourth quarter spurt. Kent Trobaugh added 14 points and Mark Lantz and Worth Packer each added nine to the Wawasee output.
