Couple approaches pastorship as team
Pastor F. Hazen Sparks, who recently replaced David Wldmoyer as pastor of the Hastings United Methodist Church, says he and wife Beatrice are of the old school, with them approaching each pastorship as a team. "So through the years," the pastor said, "she's been a teammate. And a good one." Together, they attend worship services some Thursday evenings and church meetings. "Before we retired," Rev. Sparks said," she always sang In the choir." Their present church does not have a choir, but does have a good congregation, which sings, they explained. The pastor was appointed by Bishop Ralph Alton to his present pastorship, to serve during the Illness of Rev. Widmoyer. Before assuming his new duties, he served 12 other pastorships. Rev. Sparks retired In 1971, but has done several things In that time. He finished building their new home In Epworth Forest, took a trip to Alaska, was a temporary preacher In 33 churches, held evangelical services for neighboring churches, and conducted spiritual life enrichment retreats. He also was the pastor of a Middlebury church for three years. "All through the house we have things to remind us of the lovely friends we have," the pastor said, of Items in the house from former congregation members and others. Both pastor and Mrs. Sparks travel from their home to the church several times a week. He does calling on Thursday afternoons before the study and prayer group meets Thursday evening at the church. "We find they're a good cross section of the age

Recently, the church had a Rally Day, which saw 58 members In attendance. "We have set a goal at 10 per cent increase in attendance and membership for 1978." the pastor said. Pastor and Mrs. Sparks have two sons and two daughters.

Syracuse driver strikes, kills cow Kathy A. Morgensen, 23, r 2 Syracuse, was driving on SR 13, two miles north of Pierceton at 4 a.m. Saturday, when she struck and killed a three-year-old Angus cow owned by Ed Teeple, r 1 Pierceton. Morgensen told police she was driving in 1 patch of fog, when she came across cattle crossing the roadway, which had gotten loose. She applied her brakes and avoided some cows, but hit the one animal. Morgensen received two broken front teeth. Damage of $1,200 was listed to the auto.

Sunday, Nov. 6, will be the monthly carry-in dinner following regular church services at Morris Chapel Methodist Church. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the good food and fellowship. “Reflection.” the Gospel Singing group from Whitko High School, under the direction of Linden Boggs will preform as special guests on Sunday evening Nov. 6, at 7:30 at the Morris Chapel Methodist Church. Rev. Charles Taylor. Roger Middleton, Bob Reiff, Keith Jones, and Rev. Chester Smith attended the Huntington District Methodist Men’s Fall Roundup at North Mancesheter College last Wednesday evening. About 30 children enjoyed a Halloween party at the church on Thursday evening. They visited many homes throughout the area and collected funds for CROP, to help feed the hungry children of the world. After returning to the church they enjoyed games and refreshments of hot cocoa and doughnuts. Rev. and Mrs. Taylor attended the Jimmy Swaggert Crusade at the Convention Center in Indianapolis ■ last Friday night. They spent the night with their granddaughter, Marie Martin of Indianapolis and returned home on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Engelberth and daughter Jennie of Paris, DI., Mrs. Henry Engelberth of Warsaw and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Engelberth of West Lafayette, were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Engelberth. Mr. and Mrs. John Rantz attended the 25-year-club banquet of the Peter Eckrich and Company at the Empirial House in Fort Wayne on Saturday night. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Outcelt and Mrs. Jack Howard and son Joe, attended the Chain-of Lakes Barbershop Quartet Fall Harvest program at Columbia City on Sunday afternoon and also the After-glo in the evening. TO BE AT NEW SALEM — The Promised Land Singers from Greentown will be featured at the Homecoming service at the New Salem Church of the Brethren near Milford on Sunday, Nov. 8. The group will be giving special music during the morning service at 1B:3B a.m. A basket dinner will be held at 12 noon. Vanlaningham and Jack Teeple accompanied the singing on guitars. Jack Teeple led the meeting with reports given by Randy Wildman and Jeff Carroll. Movies and slides were shown which were taken at youth camp. A question and answer period was conducted by Randy Wildman. Jack closed the meeting with devotions. Helping Hands hold work night Helping Hands was held Tuesday evening in the meeting room. Knotting comforters, being rugs and makings cancer pads were the work of the evening. Mrs. Max Shively conducted the business meeting. Mrs. Edwin Meek gave the devotions by reading Psalms 19, an article from the Daily Bread and “Doubts”.
