Obituaries
Dr. Alvin L. Johnson is accident victim
A Syracuse man is dead as a result of a two-car head-on collision on US 33, one mile north of Merriam, in Noble County at 5:40 p.m. last Monday. Dead is Doctor Alvin L. Johnson. 53, r 1 Syracuse. He died at 7:21 p.m. Wednesday in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he was listed in serious condition following the accident. Death was caused by injuries resulting from the accident. He was hospitalized with a fractured leg and hip and fractured ribs as well as cuts to the head and face. Also injured in the crash was Hebert Hewitt. 45, of Ligonier, who was treated and released from Whitley County Hospital for lacerations The collision occurred when Hewitt, en route south on US 33, started to turn left onto a private drive colliding with the oncoming Johnson car. The head-on collision occurred in the northbound lane of the road July 28. 1924-OcL It, 1977 Johnson, a resident of Lake Wawasee for six years coming from Fort Wayne, was bom July 20, 1924, in Jackson. Mich. He was the son of Lee Thad and Ethel (Fuller) Johnson. On October 18. 1947. he married the former Valerie H. Bienas Johnson was a practicing optometrist in Fort Wayne. Evelyn Kline June 1895 —Oct 21,1977 A North Webster native, Evelyn L. Kline, 82, of Washington. D. C., died Friday, Oct 21, in Washington Hospital Center, Washington. D. C. Death was due to complications following an illness of two weeks. A former resident of Warsaw, she was born in June of 1895 to Henry T. and Alta (Willis) Kline in North Webster. She was employed as an accountant in the Department of Naval Reserves in Washington during World War I. and continued to live in that city since the end of that war.

Survivors include two cousins. Mrs. Ray Nine, North Webster, and Mrs. Sumner DeWitt of Winona Lake. One sister, Mrs. Lila Hodges, Chicago, DI., and two brothers, Ray Kline, Dixon, Hl., and John Kline, California, preceded her in death. Mrs. Thomas Damron Sept. 13,1934-Oct 21,1977 . Mrs. Thomas (Nonna Jean) Damron, 43,10896 CR 18 Goshen, daughter of John Reed of Syracuse, died Friday, Oct. 21, in die Goshen Hospital. She was admitted to the hospital on September 21 and had been ill with cancer for two years. Bom in Goshen on September 13, 1934, Mrs. Damron married Thomas J. Damron, Sr., in November 1956. He survives. The deceased was a former employee of the American Laundry and Dry Cleaners in Goshen. Surviving beside her husband and father are one daughter. Rosalie, at home; four sons, Steven, at home, Thomas, James and Gary, all of Goshen; her mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis H. (Marion) Lung of Goshen; and one grandchild Funeral services were conducted Monday, Oct. 24, at 10:30 a m in the Rieth-Rohrer-Ehert Funeral Home in Goshen. Rev. Vera M. Granger, pastor of Osolo Missionary Church, officiated at the service. Burial was in the South Union Cemetery, Nappanee. Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society of Elkhart County.

Mrs. Frank E. Bates Nov. 23,1883-Oct. 22.1977 Former Syracuse resident, Mrs. Blanche F. Bates, 83, died Saturday, Oct 22, at 8:30 a m. in the British Retirement Home, Villa Park, 111., following a long term illness. Mrs. Bates was born in Nappanee on November 23, 1893, to Ehas and Mary Alice (Sechrist) Williams. She married Frank E. Bates on October 15, 1914. He preceded her in death in 1969. The Bates moved to Syracuse in 1947 where they owned and operated the Dixie Grill and Restaurant. They had formerly resided in Chicago and Warsaw. The deceased was a member of the Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Syracuse, the Eastern Star in Syracuse, the Syracuse and Warsaw Business and Professional Women’s Club and the DAR. Survivors include one son, Lionel G. Bates of Villa Park, DI.; one grandson, Joel Bates of Houston, Texas; one granddaughter. Mrs. Janice Knaus of Saint Louis, Mo.; and four greatgrandchildren. Rev. March 24,1895, he was the son of Noah J. and Maria (Miller) Mock. His marriage to Eva Belle Miller occurred on December 24, 1912. A retired minister of the Church of God, he was an evangelist for many years in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. He also operated the Golden Rule Nursing Home in Wilmot, North Webster, for 17 years before retiring. He lived all of his life in the North Webster, Wilmot addition area. Surviving are his wife, Eva; two sons, Warren, Wilmot and Cloice of Mishawaka; one daughter, Mrs. Melvin (Ireta) Galloway of Lakis pell. Mont.; eight grandchildren; 14 greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held yesterday (Tuesday) at 1 p.m. in the Harris Funeral Home. Rev. Earl Marquis officiated. Burial was in the North Webster Cementery. Leno Stametz Nov. 17,1987 — Oct 29,1977 Lena E. Stametz, 69, r 1 Syracuse, died at 10:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, in the Saint Joseph Hospital, South Bend. Death followed a three week illness. Bora in Goshen to Frank and Nellie (Schipper) Stametz on November 17, 1907, she was a former employe of Miles Laboratory. She was also a member of the Presbyterian Church of Elkhart. Surviving are two brothers, Joe and Howard, both of Syracuse; and several nieces and nephews, including Thomas Stametz of Syracuse. Three brothers preceded her in death.

Fannie Hochstetler April 28,1911 - Oct 17,1977 Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. last Thursday in the North Mair. Street Mennonite Church at Naipanee for Mrs. Moses J. (Fannie I.) Hochstetler, 66, 702 West Centennial St., Nappanee. Mrs. Hochstetler was the sister of Mrs. Ralph (Rosetta) Miller and Levi and Edward Chupp, all of Milford. She died at 11:30 p.m. Monday, Oct 17, in the emergency room of the Elkhart Hospital where she had been taken after suffering a heart attack earlier. She had been in failing health for several years. Bora in Cheyenne Wells, Colo., on April 28, 1911, she was the daughter of Ira J. and Katie (Stutzman) Chupp. She married Moses J. Hochstetler on September 14,19- ,1. in LaGrange. He survives. Mrs. Hochstetler was a member of the North Main Street Church. Surviving with the Milford relatives ami husband are two sons, Lee of Elkhart and Ray of Nappanee; tvo granddaughters; another brother, Ira, of Arlington. T*xas.
