Last minute win stolen in varsity battle last week

By MARK STIFFLER / The Wawasee Warriors were leading the highly-ranked Rockies until the last minute of the game at Plymouth Fnday night, but still lost to the Rockies 7-6 _ The way the game began it looked like it might be a long night for Wawasee The Warriors took the opening kickoff, but quarterback Andy Brown threw an intercept ion on the first play from scrimmage. Plymouth couldn't move the ball, however, and had to punt The Warriors had better luck on their next possession as senior tailback Jim Glon took a handoff and canned the ball 50 yards to the Rockies’

23-yard line On a fourth down Brown kept the drive alive with a pass completion to John Conway that gave Wawasee a first and goal on the Plymouth 6 yard line On another fourth down, this time from the 10, Brown threw a touchdown pass to Conway. The Warriors were ahead of the second ranked Rockies 6-0. The extra point attempt, however, was blocked This proved to be the difference The touchdown came back with about 7 minutes left in the first quarter. Both defenses stiffened up as there was no more scoring in the first period. The Wawasee defense remained stiff

throughout the third period and the Wawasee hopes for a tremendous upset grew stronger and stronger. Then with about 7 minutes left in the game. Plymouth took over possession of the ball and with Buchanan carrying on almost every play, the Rockies drove steadily down the field. Buchanan tied the score when he buret over from the two with :59 left in the game. The extra point attempt was good and Plymouth led 7-6. The Warriors got the kickoff but couldn’t put a drive together as time ran out. Pete Buchanan led Plymouth rushers with over 200 yards. Plymouth put the game away with a touchdown in the final two 22. Wawasee did have one bit of luck Saturday. Pete Buchanan was not on the Plymouth JV. The Warriors will tangle with Concord Saturday at Concord, minutes. The Wawasee defense was led by Roger Shipley, Randy Blackburn, and Doug Mock. The final score was Plymouth 36, Wawasee Freshmen win 26-13 over East Noble The Wawasee freshman squad won a 26-13 victory over East Noble last Thursday. The young Warriors scored two TD’s in the first quarter, one in the second quarter and one in the third. East Noble scored in the second and final stanzas. John Locke scored Wawasee’s first TD on a 71-yard run following a fumble recovery. Tony Miller went in for two extra points. Miller scored the remaining three TD’s on three, nine and five yard runs. The tries for the points after failed. Leading tacklers were Bruce Rookstool and Oscar Hernandez with six each. Tony Miller had 209 yards gained added to his record. The Warriors gained a total of 310 • yards during the game They now have a 3-1 record and will play at Plymouth on Thursday night. A suburbanite put on a lastminute spurt of speed to catch his train — but missed it. A bystander remarked, “If you had just run a little faster you would have made it.” “No,” the suburbanite replied, “it wasn't a case of running faster, but of starting sooner.”
