'Aspiration of foreign objects' lead cause of accidental deaths
Almost anything that gets into the hands of a toddler eventually winds up in his or her mouth. From there, it can slip down into the lungs and cause trouble, says the American Lung Association. Before we swallow, we automatically take in a little air and hold our breath. This closes a valve in our throat called the glotis, thereby blocking the entrance to the windpipe and lungs. But anything small can accidentally slide down the windpipe — wihout being swallowed — and end up in the lungs. “Aspiration of foreign bodies.” the medical term for this mixup. is the single most cause of accidental death in the home among children under six. Safety pins are the most frequently aspirated items in children under the age of one Coins and nuts are more common in the two- to four-year-old group Government standards specify minimum sizes for .toys for children under the age of three: the toys must be more than an inch wide and more than two inches long, too big to slip down
little windpipes. Small objects — including peas, peanuts, corn, candy, buttons — that become lodged in the lungs can permanently destroy a breathing passage and sometimes cause a severe pneumonia that may predispose the youngster to chronic lung disease. Parents should take special pains to keep small objects well out of reach of infants and toddlers. They should caution
Better Business Bureau urges medical evaluation
An estimated 15 million Americans suffer from hearing impairment. Yet, over 10 million of these people have never had a medical evaluation of their hearing loss, and only about three million of them wear hearing aids. More startling, suggest the Better Business Bureau, is the 70 per cent of those
youngsters not to talk and eat at the same time, to chew slowly and thoroughly and not to run with food m their mouths. To find out more about ways to prevent lung disease in children and people of all ages, contact your lung association — the “Christmas Seal” people. They care about every breath you take. To support the fight against lung disease, answer your Christmas Seal letter as soon as you can.
who do purchase hearing aids consult their dealer, not their doctor, for a hearing evaluation. A physician — particularly, an eye-ear-nose-throat specialist — is more qualified to provide a thorough evaluation and medical examination then a hearing aid dealer. Excess ear wax. dirty auditory canals, an allergy or a
cold sometimes produce temporary deafness. In such cases, a hearing aid may not be the remedy. A “hearing aid audiologist.” although well-screened and certified by the National Hearing Aid Society, is not a physician. State licensing may require only two years of sales experience in the hearing aid business. In lieu of sales experience, passing a simple examination is sometimes the only major requirement. “Nothing in this examination." reads a licensing bill approved by the National Hearing Aid Society, “shall imply that the applicant shall possess the degree of medical competence normally expected erf physicians." Some unethical dealers may recommend a hearing aid to a person who does not need one or can in no way benefit from wearing one. A physician, on the other hand, should have nointerest in selling hearing aids. To encourage people to see a physician before a dealer, the Food and Drug Administration recently has passed a regulation. Effective August 15. 1977 hearing aids can be sold to only those who have had a medical evaluation for hearing loss within the past six months. However, the evaluation can be specifically waived in writing by the purchaser except for those under 18 years of age. The regulation also requires manufacturers to provide" a detailed brochure which informs consumers what hearing aids can do, how they work and how to use them. This type of regulation protects consumers from unethical sales practices. Still, a person with a hearing problem must shop carefully to avoid buying a “lemon aid" (a hearing aid which does not work properly or is overpriced) Because the price of a hearing aid may vary from SIOO to S4OO. comparative shopping is wise. Before buying a hearing aid. some essential questions should be asked: How is the quality of the sound 9 Are the controls easy to operate, especially by an infirm or elderly person 9 Does the price include the ear mold: Bearing in mind that some hearing aids are more expensive than others, what is the cost of maintenance? Arrange a trail period in which to test your hearing aid before makings final purchase. Even if a rental fee is charged, a trial period is the best way of knowing whether the hearing aid is suitable. A hearing impairment is a serious handicap. Like other physical problems, it requires medical attention. If a doctor recommends a hearing aid, remember these suggestions from the Better Business Bureau before buying one. 8v Jack Hous* Th* Oncctor Teacher s Scotch Information Centre The Improver Many Americans visiting Scotland go to the village of New Lanark to see the place where Robert Owen first got his ideas for a co-operative and community movement. He got them from his father-in-law, a Glasgow merchant named David Dale, who was Sir Walter Scott’s model for Bailie Nicol Jarvie in “Rob Roy.” sA’ eSO David Dale was far in advance of his time in industrial methods. He built spinning mills in which most of the workers were children. But they were well looked after and had school lessons, including dancing classes. By each worker’s loom Dale hung an “improver,” a small block of wood with different colored sides. The side which showed outwards told whether the operator was working well. White meant •‘excellent,” yellow was “good,” blue was “room for improvement," and black was “bad.” Teacher’s Scotch Information Centre suggests that you might say the “improver" colored the workers’ lives.

Waiting list is long for insulating homes
As the winter season approaches. many homeowners are deciding that now is the time to insulate their homes. And, according to two area insulation installers, the waiting list is long and the supply short. John Phillippe, of Lake Tippecanoe Siding & Insulation Co., Inc., North Webster, says its a "very serious situation.” He said he is presently three weeks to a month behind on orders and expects it to get worse before winter “I think its going to be serious before winter’s here.” Phillippe says he now receives about 3040 calls per day on people wanting their homes insulated. Most of the insulation that is being asked for is insulating attics. This usually only takes a few hours to do says Phillippe. Other forms of insulation, like insulating the side walls as well as the ceilings, take from one to two days to complete. Several types of insulation in use now is cellulose fiber, fiberglass or rock wool. Tippecanoe Siding used the cellulose fiber due to its high R factor. Phillippe says the insulation business has been good throughout the years, but has really increased over the past year. One of the reasons for this, says Phillippe, is the rebate given now for insulating homes. This rebate raises the prices of insulation and the installer says he would much rather they didn't have it. He said, "people aren’t gaining much they are actually paying more money.” He said before the rebate “insulation business was good and the supply plentiful ” Phillippe added that the best time to insulate is in the summer when the supply is plentiful. Another benefit is that insulation works just as well in the summer as it does in the winter. Hard To Get Ray Buhrt, of Ray Buhrt Builders, Syracuse, says insulation is really hard to get right now. He said the supply should be more plentiful by winter, however, because most of the insulation will have been done by that time.

Ray Buhrt Builders actually does not install insulation on. homes that are already built, they just have it installed while they are building the home. As a builder, Buhrt recommends that homeowners insulate their homes. He said the best place to insulate is the attic, because that is where there is the most heat loss. Crawl spaces are another good area to insulate, said Buhrt. He stressed, though, to make sure of what kind of insulation that is used and to have it installed properly. He said that the insulation should be placed on the warm side of the house, or on the inside, so as to let the moisture escape. He said there has to be a vapor barrier, or the insulation won’t work to its full potential. Buhrt said there are a lot of new insulations on the market now and the buyer has to beware of what kind he uses. He said of the new ones, such as'styrofoam. if it isn’t applied properly, there could be some trouble. He said, “it’s a learning process in lot of the new insulation.” . The best types of insulation to use, says Buhrt, are fiberglass and cellulose fiber. Fiberglass is best on sidewalls and ceilings, said the builder, and it is also very fire resistant. Cellulose fiber is also good, according to Buhrt. but it isn’t as fire resistant as fiberglass. Buhrt said cellulose fiber is the insulation that is used more. The reason for this is that it has a higher R factor than fiberglass. Hie R factor, says Buhrt, is the resistance of one thermal of heat transferring through the insulation in one hour. The higher the R factor, the better the insulation, or the more effective. Buhrt, too, as with Phillippe, says that summer is probably the best time to insulate as far as the supply is concerned. But, he said, “anytime is a good time.” “Silence is the fence around wisdom." Hebrew proverb "The silent man is the best to listen to." Japanese proverb
