New training program preps swimmers

Beginning a new training program, the Wawasee Warriorette swim team, 44 strong, is preparing for the opening of their season. Returning as lettering team members are Theresa Carpenter, Lin Ummel, Darsee Stahley, Nancy Amos, Carmen Bryant, Lorrie Morgan, Linda Lowe, “Boody” Brewer, Rose Easley, Laura Kroh, Jan Miller, Angie Reed, and Tonya Taylor. Notable is the absence of Traci Rinker, a top-notch diver on last year’s line-up. Rinker is sidelined following an injury. Coach Cindy Peterson says the loss of Rinker will not hurt the team. “We were strong in diving and we still will be,” explained Peterson. She added the team just won’t be eighth or tenth in the state, as they were. Diver Nancy Amos, Peterson feels, is top 10 material. And, several other divers are coming along — Easley, Belinda Boyer, Tammy Beer and Tonya Davis. Some good times are being turned in by Morgan, Carpenter, Reed and Brewer, their coach reports. Several of last year’s freshmen are going to be relied upon this year. Debbie Bartow, Diane Dieterly, and Kathy Davis have been named as team members faith is being instilled in. Peterson also added the freshmen are coming along pretty well. too. This Monday, the team began a new training program. “What it’s actually doing is making the kids give more,” Peterson commented. During the first day of the new program, the team members worked harder than they have in the last couple of weeks, their coach related. If the kids don't get lapped in practice, they receive a prize, such_as a sucker. Once the meets begin, the objective is to better their individual times. Then, they can go all the way to the state. “But really,” Peterson added, “they’ve got to have that goal if they're going to get there.” Next Saturday four of the

Warriorette divers will compete in the Central Diving Invitational. “I think Elkhart will take it this year.” Peterson predicted.
