Warriors laced by Rochester
By MARK STIFFLER The Wawasee Warriors were hurt badly by the run as the gridders lost to Rochester’s Zebras 26-0 Friday night Rochester got off to a slow start but, aided by a Wawasee fumble of a punt, was able to tally late in the first quarter. Andy Brown fumbled the Rochester punt on his own 15 When the scramble was over Ken Smith had recovered the ball on the Wawasee five Dan Beck scored for the Zebras on a one-yard run Tim Walters kicked the extra point and Rochester led 7-0 with 18 seconds left in the first period Early in the second quarter Wawasee put together a short drive from their 33 to the Rochester 47 where the drive stalled The Warriors punted but got the ball right back thanks to a Zebra clipping penalty. A fourth down run failed so Rochester got their hands on the ball on their own 38 From there they marched down the field and scored on a 22-yard sewing pass from quarterback Stew Treglia to Joe Paulik The score came with 4:16 remaining in the half The extra point was good and Rochester took a 14-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The third quarter was scoreless so the score was still 140 going into the final period. With 10:17 left Joe Paulik caught a 10 yard scoring aerial that had bounced off the chest of Wawasee linebacker Kevin Butcher. The extra point attempt was blocked by the Warriors. Rochester scored its final points on a oneyard run by Chris Walley The extra point was no good so with 1:40 left on the clock the score was: Rochester 26 Wawasee 0. The Warriors received the kickoff and showed signs of putting together a long drive. Andy Brown tossed passes of 13. 12. and 17 yards to Ted Knudsen and Tom Kroh. It should be noted, however, that the Zebras were in a “prevent defense”. Time ran out as the Warriors were driving toward the Rochester end zone Despite the one-sided score there were some close statistics. For example: first downs — Rochester had 11 first downs while Wawasee had 9. The passing yardage was also rather close The big difference " as the rushing yardage where Rochester amassed 190 yards. Wawasee gave up the ball 4 times on fumbles There were some
football team romped over the Rochester Zebras Saturday to raise their record to 2-1. Rochester jumped off to an early 8-0 lead on a 92-yard pass interception return for a touchdown plus a run for the two point conversion The Warriors came storming back however. Todd Hardy scored from the one and Craig Batchelor ran for the two extra points to tie the score at 8. In the second period Hal Hammaker grabbed a Dan Andrew s pass to complete a 25yard sewing play After a scoreless third quarter Ray Gerber completed the scoring in the fourth period with a two-yard run and the two point conversion The Warrior defense was outstanding. It held Rochester to only three first downs The JV Warriors will be in action again Saturday when they travel to New Prairie.

outstanding players on the Wawasee defense. Ken Patton and Gary Shand combined for 17 tackles while Phil Beer grabbed an interception. The determining factors, according to Hal Traviolia. were the turnovers and the mental mistakes. When he was asked if there was something the team would concentrate on this week Traviolia replied. “Well try to concentrate on the offense so the defense doesn’t have to play so much.” The Warriors’ next game is this Friday night at home against New Prairie. Match number three was at the Rozella Ford Golf Club. On September 6 the Warriorettes received their first loss, from Warsaw. Warsaw defeated Wawasee with a 211-229 score. Low score for Wawasee was Carla Darr with a 52. Wawasee met Goshen on September 7 at the Maplecrest Country Club. Freshmen team stops Panthers Members of the Wawasee High School freshman football team stopped North Wood Panthers on the Warrior field last Thursday, Sept. 8, by the score of 8-6. Wawasee’s score came in the first quarter on a one-yard TD run by Tony Miller. Miller also ran in the extra two points for the 8-0 lead. He made a total of 40 yards on 13 carries during the game. ■ ' \\ ft *sk WATCHES APPROACH — Watching the approach of the ball is Bryan Smith, the Wawasee Warrior number two seed.
Net play emphasized
“I want them up to the net just as soon as they can get there,” says Wawasee High School tennis coach Jack Marlette of his 5-3 squad. He is a believer of playing a serve-and-volley game on fast surfaces, such as cement or composition, and is emphasizing this style with his players. All of the team members are capable of playing a baseline game. Marlette said, with most using two-handed backhands against their opponents. Returning to the Warrior courts are J D. Carl, Mark Krug, Bryan Smith. Greg Carpenter and Kent Trobaugh. Carl, Smith and Trobaugh are ranked one, two and three, respectively. All are seniors. But. Marlette is still trying to find a winning combination for doubles. Variations of pairings with Carpenter, Stuart Bryant, Doug Rassi and Dave Tucker have been experimented with in the search. “I strongly believe in the ladder system.” Marlette explained. On Mondays and Fridays when the team doesn’t have a match, the players can challenge each other. If the number five man beats the number four man, he is ranked number four — until he loses the next challenge. The team began workouts August 20. “We’re working,” Marlette said of the younger members of the team Basics, such as grips, strokes, stance and footwork are practiced. “They practice every night, whether we re here or not, ” Marlette said of the underclassmea Marlette has selected Concord as the toughest conference team his W'arriors will meet. But Bremen, with the number two
ranked singles player in the state, playing in their number one spot, may be a bit of trouble. Last season, the Warriors were shut out, 5-0 by Concord and stung by Bremen, 3-2. The team’s matches with Jimtown and Warsaw this week were rained out. Warsaw has been rescheduled for Friday. The Warriors face Northridge tonight at Northridge, match time 4:30 p.m.
