Goshen shuts out Warriors

By JERI SEELY The Goshen Redskins visited Warrior field last Friday night and shut out the Wawasee team 19-6 before a full house. It was only the second shut out in the history of the football team, the first being by Northfield in September of 1968 when the Warriors were defeated 7-0 in the school’s first varsity football game. The Warrior defense played a tremendous game, however, the offense didn’t get the job done and therein lies the final results. Goshen won the toss and received the kick, returning the ball to the 22-yard line. A first down was recorded but the team was forced to kick on a fourth and five Ted Knudson partially blocked a punt, one of two during the evening, and Wawasee took over on the 40-yard line. Ray Gerber, who gained 86 yards in 21 carries during the evening, tallied Wawasee’s first first down. He is the team’s leading rusher The Warriors failed to gam their second first down and were forced to give the ball to Goshen after Rick Hamsher caught quarterback Andy Brown behind the line on a four and six play. The ball continued to change hands for several minutes. At 3 28 Gerber fumbled the ball with Goshen’s Orland Miller making the recovery. Dave Edlund made three successive carries to put the ball in the end zone for the Redskins The kick was good and Goshen took a 7-0 lead Goshen's second score came a few minutes later when Warrior Kent McMillan tipped a pass to Phil Beer in the end zone Beer started out of the end zone, went back in and downed the ball. Goshen was given a safety and the score was 9-0 The ball changed hands several times during the second quarter with neither team scoring. A few minutes of excitement were enjoyed by the Warrior fans when Tom Kroh caught a pass from Brown in a crowd of Redskins and gained 14 yards for Wawasee It was the first of two passes he caught during the evening as he totaled ZI yards gamed The Warriors took the kick off to begm the second half. The ball was caught in the end zone and moved out to the 20-yard line They failed to get the first down and Goshen took over Ken Patton and Ted Knudson proved to be Warrior sparkplugs as they did outstanding jobs of containing Goshen on several occasions during the evening Knudson played both offense and defense Also named by cdach Hal Traviolia as outstanding

Warriorettes get set for net action

By SUSAN BENNETT It’s nerves time for the Warriorette volleyball team at Wawasee High School, as they open their season against Elkhart Central tonight (Wednesday) at 6:30 at home. Coach Pam Juday said she and the team are nervous, but believes a lot of the edge is because it is the first game. With more games. Juday expects the squad’s confidence to build. ‘‘l think they’re ready,” Juday said Tuesday. “They just have to get up for it.” The Plymouth team, which the team will meet Thursday in their first Northern Lakes Conference contest, Juday says is always good. Strong points of the Warriorettes are serving and spiking, Juday said. “And we really have some good setters, if we can get it to them,” Juday added. Cuts on the team weren’t made for a time this season, because the composition of the “C” team had not been established. Returning on the varsity team are Martha Salazar, Shelly Dahlstrom, Lorene Spearman. Bea Carvajal, and Sonya Hoover. Rounding out the varsity are Jeannie Dye, Jenny Hughes and Theresa Welborn, a new Warriorette who is from Niles. Mich. Mary Cox, Laurie Brouwer, Jeri Meditch. Jo Spearman. Brenda Skelton and Chris Walgamuth participate on the junior varsity level. The “C” team is a unit, members of which, have the possibility of moving to the junior varsity squad. Lonni
