Possible change in low yield payment eligibility

Wheat and feed grain farmers who suffer low yields because of a natural disaster may be eligible for a disaster payment even though they have no allotment or have overplanted their allotments. According to Phil Braman of the Kosciusko County ASCS office, congressional conferees have agreed on a farm bill that would change the eligibility for low yield payments. Under provisions of the conference bill, a fanner who suffered reduced yields due to natural causes may be eligible for a disaster payment based on the number of acres actually

planted for harvest rather than the number of allotment acres. Braman indicated that farmers who were told they would not be eligible for a low yield wheat payment becasue of overplanting may now be eligible. In anticipation of possible adoption by Congress and enactment by the President, and to speed resulting payments to farmers. ASCS is accepting disaster claims for all farms where natural causes reduced yields of wheat. Farmers who suffered low yielding wheat may file their claim at the ASCS office by presenting production evidence and completing the disaster application.
