Church getting active in community
"I think we're really trying to get active in the community/' said Mrs. Priscilla Juday, social concerns chairman of the Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse. One of the concerns of the social concerns group has developed Into a project, a telecare system operating in Syracuse./'We talked about this several months," Mrs. Juday said. Several people from the church were ill and the group members were concerned about their well being. The program developed last spring, in which members of the telecare-visltation committee have volunteered to contact someone by telephone each day. The calls are made at a specific time of day, arranged between the caller and the person contacted. Through the call, the welfare of the person is determined and if there is something the person needs, such as medication, groceries or a doctor, it is obtained. Each person who wishes to be contacted provides a neighbor with a key to their home. If the telecare caller does not receive an answer, the neighbor is contacted and asked to see if the individual Is all right.

Telecare-visitation caller says project ’good thing'
Mrs. Helen Miller, Oakwood Park, telephones two people each day in the telecarevisitation project of the Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse. "And this is a good thing," Mrs. Miller said. She thinks back to her mother, who had several medical problems, and was afraid of being alone. Mrs. Miller said she also has a friend who was to go with friends, they called for her and received no answer and went on their way. A little later, they began to get worried and had the maintenance personnel unlock the woman's door. They found her following a heart attack, but still alive. "So that brought to me the importance of this," Mrs. Miller added. She said she was enthusiastic about the project when it began. One of the two ladies she calls daily told her, "You don't know how

The program currently has more callers than people to call, Mrs. Juday said. About 15 people have volunteered to call people, with only about eight people presently being called. The committee is trying to get more people who want to receive such a service. Younger people or people who are alone may also ask to be called. Mrs Juday emphasized you do not have to be a member of the church or be in financial trouble to obtain such service. Chairing the committee is Mrs. Harry Stewart. Presently serving as callers are Lillian Disher, Gertrude Stucky, Priscilla Juday, Betty Eton, Shirley Bobeck, Marlene Pollack, Katie Myers, Vera Craven, Kathleen Naigle, Jane Stewart, Opal Nolan, Mary Ott, Bert Rhodes, Jessie Weingardt, Helen Miller, Erma Byland and Olive Bitzer. Mrs. Judy feels the committee and the service is still in the developmental stage, but is picking up momentum. "Response so far has been good," Mrs. Juday feels, "but not as much as we'd like." "We feel that the church's position should be in helping the community," Mrs. Juday said.

good it is someone's concerned and checking on you each day." "You know," Mrs. Miller commented, "as you talk to them each day, things unfold and a friendship grows." Both are members of the church, which she spoke to casually before. Since the program began, these ladies and Mrs. Miller talk to each other more at church. Mrs. Miller said the project is important to those called in a psychological sense. One of the ladies was ill for several days and Mrs. Miller called her each morning and later in the day to see how she was or if she needed something. She explained this is common procedure in the program. "I really believe this should be a part of every church's projects," Mrs. Miller said. "And I really hope someday this comes about."
