Warriors fail to execute plays, stopped by Warsaw in first outing

By JERI SEELY The annual Wawasee-Warsaw football game Friday night had all the rivalry of seasons past. However, it lacked the finesse of the experienced teams of seasons past with graduation cutting hard into Coach Hal Traviolia’s starting line. . The Warriors took to the field for their first outing with onlyfour veterans on offense and seven on defense Enthusiasm was high and while junior quarterback Andy Brown lacks the confidence of the man he is replacing (Keith Cripe was at the helm of the Warrior team for two years prior to his graduation last spring), he was in there trying Friday night Trying was not good enough, however, as* Wawasee came home with a 14-7. loss "I think it's primarily inexperience," said the coach who also listed having to play players in v several positions and the heat as prime factors for Friday's loss. Everything started out the way the Warriors wanted it even though they played the entire game without the services erf lettermen Jim Glon and Ken Patton Warsaw won the toss and received the kick They did not keep the bail long as Ted Knudsen picked up a fumble at 9:49 to give the ball to the Warriors who marched down field on four successive plays where Brown scored on ? keeper with 6:43 to play in the quarter Dan Andrews, a junior letterman, kicked the extra point to put the Warriors in a 7-0 lead The ball then see-sawed back and forth for the next several minutes with neither team scoring during the remainder of the quarter which ended with the Warriors having the ball on the 18 yard line with third and three In the first play of the second quarter Brown kept the ball for the first down at the eight-yard line Brown gained another two yards on the first play of the next series Junior Ray Gerber earned it an additional three yards to put the Warriors almost in the end zone The hope for score was never realized as Warsaw made a key interception on a Brown pass into the end zone to give the Tigers the ball Both teams showed their

inexperience during the remainder of the half with errors telling the story as the ball’ continued to change hands several times and neither team scored. "Execution is the key word/' says coach Traviolia. "If you don't execute, you don't win/' Warsaw returned to the field fired up for the second half and seemed to take command of the game as the Warriors just couldn't seem to get their Big Green Machine moving Wawasee took the kick but failed to make the first down Warsaw then marched up to the Wawasee 45 before being stopped by Knudsen. Wawasee took over and Gerber carried the ball for eight yards. Brown added another yard before being stopped, a hand off to Gerber failed and the Warriors were again forced to kick Warsaw's Steve Bradford, who proved to be the hero of the game, received a Wawasee punt about the 20-yard line and ran it down field for Warsaw's first score of the night as the Warriors over ran the defense. The kick was good and the game was tied. The ball went back to Wawasee and once again the Warriors failed to make their first down The Tigers had the ball when the quarter ended and an encroachment against Wawasee a short time later put the ball on the 11-yard line for Warsaw. Bradford was stopped by Dave Johnson at the nine and was stopped again by John Beer at the three The Tigers hit paydirt on their fourth down as Carl Anderson caught a pass for the second touchdown of their season Rob Reneker kicked his second extra point of the night and Warsaw took the lead 14-7 with 9:40 to go in the game. "It is never nice to lose/' the coach commented. We had the opportunities to score and we didn't score/' Wawasee failed to chalk up a first down during the remainder of the game as the inexperience showed and the clock ran out before the errors which plagued the entire’ team could be corrected Gary Shand made one interception during the game. Ted Knudsen recovered two fumbles and Ray Gerber made 19 carries for a total of 44 yards Quarterback Andy Brown has 11 for 6 in passes with yardage totaling 53 He also gained five yards in 11 carries Warsaw intercepted one of Brown's passes Wawasee will host Goshen on the Warrior field this Friday raght

Warrior gridmen face second initial conference match

Approaching the middle game of three contests which count in the Northern Lakes Conference, the Wawasee Warrior varsity squad takes on Goshen Friday night, at their first home game. The team began the trio of conference battles with Warsaw, and were defeated 14-7, bringing the rivalry record to 3-1 in their favor. The third game will be with Rochester, September 9. Thirteen lettermen have returned this season, to fill gaps left from the graduation of several experienced players. Graduated teammates from last year’s 7-3 season are tailback Rick Bauman, quarterback Keith Cripe, Mitch Ousley, Joel Popenfoose. Mark Francis and Dave Denney. “We feel that we have more experience returning on defense than anywhere else.” coach Hal Traviolia explained. Playing defensive positions are returning lettermen John Beer, Ken Patton. Ted Knudsen, Ken McMillian and Andy Wollman. Traviolia is attempting to "coordinate” his offensive unit, and just this week moved Todd Hepler, another returning letterman, from the defense to offense. Regular Kevin Butcher is joined by Andy Brown at quarterback, Ray Gerber, tailback; and Dave Johnson, wide receiver. The 32-10 record Wawasee coach is allowing his inexperienced players play to get needed offensive experience. The Kroh brothers. Tom as split-end and Stan at fullback are being played on the line. Rick McKibben is playing center and alternating at guard are Craig Luttman. Gary Shand and Butcher. Alternating at tight-end are Ted Knudsen and Ken Patton. O. V. Harris is playing tackle. Shand is being used on both the offensive and defensive units. As for improvement over the beginning outings, Traviolia said, “Well, we'll know more Friday night.” He added, “But I think we see more experience coming each day.” The actions of the players are becoming more reflexive, rather than reacting after the moment has passed, he said.
