Oakwood Park was being used by the Methodist groups as an assembly site, but by the 19205, it was felt a larger site was needed. A search began to find a site, when John Kline offered a 100-

acre tract on the north shore of North Webster Lake to the assembly. In the later years, more of his land was purchased, until the camp consisted of 243 acres. On August 18, 1921, the option committee, represented by W. B. Freeland announced the group had selected the site in North Webster. The name Epworth Forest was suggested by Rev. John C. White. Epworth, England was the birthplace of John Wesley, the father of Methodism. The first structures to be built were the Epworth Hotel and the

In the early days, a mule barn was also in operation on the grounds. It housed the mules used to plow and clear the land for the developing new structures, pull boats and assist in mowing the grass. The mules in time were replaced by gasolinepowered machinery. Many more buildings were added during the development of the camp. A hospital, craft hall, administration building and dormitory-type housing were erected. The assembly and other groups such as junior high, elementary and senior high students use the camps facilities. Camps for adults, suntiner schools and whole families are also scheduled from June through each August. Programs at Epworth Forest are conducted by the Commission on Camps and Conferences of the United Methodist Churches. Patricia Pruett serves as the director of activities and John Pruett as the resident manager.
