1 YEAR AGO, AUG. 25,1976 Miss Vicky Nyikos, Syracuse, has returned from Pensacola, Fla., where she was attending Pensacola Christian college this summer. She is a primary school teacher of the Syracuse Christian school and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Nyikos. Larry Michael, a working partner and friend of John Rinker, who was injured in a boat accident in Dayton, Ohio, on Saturday, gave the highest accolades to his friend, called him a “work freak” a man “who loves competition” and “the most honest person I’ve ever met.” Ron and Ruth Easley, Curts Hair Care Centre, participated in a 24-hour nation-wide cut-a-thon for Saint Judes hospital. The Easleys along with 40 other hairdressers from Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania, worked shifts at the event held in Cleveland. Ohio. From noon last Sunday to noon last Monday, the hairdressers raised $3,200 for the children’s hospital at 115 per head for a cut, shampoo and blow-dry. “It was a riot,” Mrs. Easley exclaimed. 5 YEARS AGO. Camp Fire girts. They were suffering extensively from lack of ram — several in such bad shape that the entire foliage had turned brown. George H. Priebe, South Bend, and Franklin M. Hendrich, a permanent resident of Lake Wawasee, were newly-elected to three year terms on the board of directors of the Wawasee Property Owners Association group. James Hamman, Syracuse, was elected president for the 1967-68 year of the Turkey Creek senior citizens at a short business meeting Tuesday night. Mrs. Agnes Stiffler was re-elected vice president, Mrs. Peter A. Blue, secretary-treasurer and Emory Guy was re-appointed sargeant-at-arms. A surprise picnic was held Sunday in the Syracuse city park honoring the 75th birthday anniversary of Cleo Weaver of Syracuse. Elvin Hoffman was returned to the Syracuse Church of God for another year at the dose of the 110th annual session of the Indiana Eldership of the Churches of God in North America held recently at the church campgrounds at Bear Lake. He will also serve the Thorncreek Church near Columbia City. Mrs. Richard Brown was recently appointed local representative of the Indiana Heart Foundation, Inc. for receiving memorial contributions to the Indiana Heart Foundation, according to announcement of Mrs. Phoebe Leeds. 45 YEARS AGO, AUG. 25,1932 No issue available. Syracuse budget hearing Monday The Town of Syracuse will hold its final budget meeting Monday night, Aug. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Syracuse Town Hall. The proposed budget for the 1978 year may increase five cents, if the proposed levies are approved. The current rate is $2.04. The proposed rate is $2.09. This proposed rate would give $1.02 to the general fund to raise $88,280, with the current rate being at $1.26. For the street fund, the proposed rate is 91 cents to raise $78,758, with the present rate of 63 cents. The proposed budget calls for a 15 cent levy in cumulative capital improvement to raise $12,982 and a one cent levy in criminal justice, to raise $865 for a total levy of $2.09, to raise $180,886. The current budget has a 15 cent cumulative fire levy and totals $2.04. Might Make Appointment David Nine, town board member, also reports there is a possibility of making the final appointment to the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission at the meeting August 29. Final budget hearing is set for Thursday
The final budget hearing for the Lakeland School Corporation’s 1978 budget is set for tomorrow night (August 25) at 7 p.m, in the administrative building. The budget was tentatively approved by the Lakeland Community School Board of Trustees in a special meeting July 26. A total of $3,844,388 was set for the general fund. This compares to the $3,596,762 approved for the 1977 budget which is an increase of $247,628, or 6.9 per cent higher. The debt service account was set at $624,400 which represents $538,150 for buildings and $86,250 for school bus bonds and interest. The proposed tax rate for 1978 is $4.42 which is a decrease of 17 cents over the 1977 rate. This is the sixth year in a row the tax rate has decreased for the corporation. The tax rate for the general fund is $».16 which would mean taxpayers would have to pay $1,696,920. The proposed rate for the debt service fund is 86 cents. This means taxpayers would have to pay $461,211. And, for the cumulative fund, the rate is 40 cents which would mean taxpayers would have to pay a total of $214,800. Taxpayers would have to pay a total of $2,373,931 for 1978 under the $4.42 tax rate if approved. The meeting is open to the public. Vandalism to Wolf van Pat Wolf, r 2 Syracuse, reported vandalism to her van Saturday night, Aug. 13. Nuts and bolts had been placed in the carburetor of the motor, causing $350 damage.
