Behind the farm market scenes
WEST LAFAYETTE - Prices of major Indiana farm products declined during the period from July 1 to mid-August, reports Lee F. Schrader. Purdue University extension agricultural economist. Crop prices followed an irregular pattern with changing weather during much of the period. By mid-August, with the bulk of the crops out of danger of drought, the markets reflected prospects for abundant supplies for the coming crop year Schrader offers the following report and analysis for major commodities: Corn — Mid-August Chicago com prices were 35 cents lower than at the first of July The major influence was the size erf the crop with production estimated at 6.1 billion bushels based on conditions Aug 1. Total use. domestic and export, is estimated at 5.7 billion bushels this year Anticipation of a $2 per bushel loan level for 1977 corn provided some support. Prices

can be below the loan level because of an expected shortage of storage and handling facilities. Soybeans — Soybean prices also ended the period lower with Chicago cash beans at $5.52 at mid-August. Old crop prices dropped more than new as most users have already arranged for the scarce old-crop supplies they need. Timely rains over a large part of the growing area have virtually assured a 1977 crop in excess of this year’s use The result was a price decline of $1.70 per bushel since July 1. Wheat — Soft wheat prices at Chicago dropped 33 cents to $2.05 at mid-August. The crop is estimated at two billion bushels and total use this year was 1.7 billion bushels. An already large carryover will increase. The loan rate of $2.25 is a factor holding prices from going even lower. Hogs — Hog prices ended the period about $2 per hundredweight lower, but remained $3 per hundredweight above the

year’s low. The very hot weather may have reduced consumer demand for meat to some extent. Pork supplies were above a year ago with prices near the same level. Cattle — Choice cattle at Omaha were trading nearly $1 per hundredweight lower at the end of the period, but about $3 per hundredweight above a year ago. Beef supplies have been near those of last year. Broilers — Broiler prices increased in early July at the seasonal peak of demand, but declined to the 41-cent area (readv-to-cook wholesale) at mid-August, about 3 cents under the first of July. Supplies have been 3 to 4 per cent above a year ago. Eggs — Egg prices dropped to 46 cents (Class I Midwest) at mid-August down from a high of 56 cents near the end of July. Cooler weather and a lower rate of hen slaughter resulted in increased output.
