Coke people tell it. Considerable credit goes to Les Webber of the Cow Palace for spearheading the promotion. The success Les experienced in the earlier uptown merchants* promotion gave him heart to tackle this, bigger promotion. Many, interested to the welfare of the commercial Syracuse community, have been talking for a long time about a com-munity-wide promotion and have met with one rebuff after another, but this time it looks like it to about to rom| off. Goshen merchants finally found the light and buried the hatchet with the shopping centers, and went in for a com-munity-wide Sidewalk Sales, and had the most successful sale in the history of that city. And so K will be here. Yoo U want to be on hand for the big event See you there.
TOWNSMAN MAURICE Crow, whose funeral was Monday, got a lot of mileage out of being what he laughingly called Turkey Creek township's loan Democrat.” Manrice wns a successful businessman who spent a lifetime in the Syracuse community, and he was a Democrat, to be sure. He was a precinct committeeman for many years and served on a number of county committees with dignity and pride to his community. CONTRACTOR C. J. Mohler just couldn’t keep it to himself. Last Thursday morning early be had to make a quick trip to New Paris to inspect a job, and as he approached that town from the east he looked into his rear-view mirror and saw a member of the gendarmes approaching, light aflicker. And so it was a speeding ticket for good old C. J. He claims it to bto first ever. WE WERE taken to task about our item that only the bank, Klink’s and Thornburg drugs were among the 4-H livestock auction purchasers at the county fair. It seems that Augsburger's Super Valu also were among the buyer* — purchasing sheep from Tim and Kathy Butt. We regret /the oversight, but it was not ' reported to us this way. Jim Plummer, who bought for the bank, lamented at the poor showing, and spoke of organizing merchants for next year’s livestock sale. It’ll work. too. WE REPORTED here last week that Joni English. “Miss Pierceton” in the county fair queen contest, collected over 13.700 for the speech and bearing clinic to her effort to win the county crown. Now we learn that Vicki Arnett, as “Miss Mentone” in the contest and adjudged first runner-up, collected $2,130, and Laura Bradbury as “Miss Warsaw I,” collected $1,600. GORDON LOPEZ of Phoenix. Ariz., and recent purchaser of Seth Ward’s “silver streak” said this week he had purchased the auto with plans to restore it, however, is currently needing a place to store it here or will need to sell it — due to a problem of getting it back to .Arizona. Anyone interested should contact Gordon, currently vacationing at Lake Wawasee where his parents have a summer home MRS. JUNE Laudeman called our Syracuse office the other day and wanted to make sure it was known that Jan Miller earned $450 swimming to the Cystic Fibrosis Swim-A-Long held Saturday. Aug. 0. Jan swam across Lake Wawasee in gloomy, wet weather to earn the amount for the good cause. Many thanks to all the swimmers who participated in the event. Chief Ron Robinson became a proud papa last Friday as his wife. Debbie, gave birth to a girl named Melissa Rae. This is the first child for the Robinsons. Many congratulations to the happy couple* WATCH FOR hn opening in I downtown Syracuse soon of a new business, that of used furniture sales FOUR LOCAL todies have currently returned from a twoweek trip to the mountains of Colorado, and are planning to

return next year. Seems Jean Miller’s van served as the mode of transportation for herself, Marilyn Moore, Ginny Kramer and Betty Appenzeller, for a planned painting trip. The place visited was El Dora, a small mining town with one stare, and the place to which they stayed was formerly the old railroad station made into a cabin and owned by Ginny’s brother-in-law and wife. In addition to painting, of which a number were also sold, the group went jeep trailing. Inking, picnicking, bathing in the cold’ waters of Boulder Creek and carried water for dishwashing and the like. HATS OFF TO the Tully famfly, participants to the Ninth Mississippi Valley Open Ski meet held to lowa tost week end, all placing quite highly to events bringing persons from Illinois. Wisconsin. lowa. Kansas and Indiana. The family resides at Elkhart and Lake Wawasee. Friends of Gerry (Mrs. Byron) Connolly will be interested to knowing her address now is 3924 Roselle Avenue. They are on sale at $5 each, proceeds going to the library. 808 DIEHL, a Cl-year native of Lake Wawasee. told this one at the Rotary meeting Tuesday. He said the story originated, as far as he knew, from his grandmother and dates back over 100 years. Diehl said Lake Wawasee got its name from a local Indian chief who showed the big body of water to his daughter Wawa. See? WORK STARTED this past week on several railroad crossings around Syracuse.
