By BILL Several years ago, when it first went into production, “Godspell" was called "a joyous celebration" by a respected Eastern drama critic. The production of ‘Godspell" which opened last week at Enchanted Hills Playhouse at the east end of Wawasee is every bit of that, and despite some opening-night rigged edges, this reviewer must report that in the course of two hours, it can lead

an audience to experience almost every disturbing human emotion from a cynical “so what" to tears of bitter joy. “Godspell" is, simply stated, the gospel according to Saint Matthew, put to music in presentday surroundings To achieve the degree of success that it deserves, the show needs a large, enthusiastic audience. We're sorry to report that on opening night, the enthusiasm was there, but there

were too few folks in the audience. Members of the "Godspell” acting company include Mike Watson, Daniel Buchen, Mary Kathleen Gordon, Dino Lara, Thomas Manzi. Janna Morrison, Debbie Shively, Suzanne Stark. Jaynee Vandenberg, Scott Whiteleather and Jerry Zehr. If you are familiar with neither the show nor the Gospel, the number 11 is significant because the cast represents, basically, Jesus and 10 disciples. We cannot fault a song among the acting company Its members survived a precarious start caused by a malfunctioning public addbress system (the bane of all performers' existences) and quickly were operating at optimum performance. Techniques in the production (and in the show itself) were developed as long ago as William Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream," and brought most recently to near-perfection in plays like “The Fantasticks," “Hair," “Don’t Bother Me, I Can t Cope," and the Thornton Wilder Classic, "The Skin of Our Teeth."

The success of “Godspell" on stage depends greatly on the

Being a member of the Wawasee Yacht Club also helps, says the Syracuse mother. The club has numerous summer activities which usually keeps the whole family busy. In a few weeks, they will go to Canada to sail in a Regatta up there. Chauffeur For the most part, Mrs. Schmahl’s children find their own entertainment. Mrs. Schmahl usually just has to act as chauffeur. In June, she said she was often driving her kids somewhere about six different times in the day. "This starts tapering off in July and August,” she said. The family also recently purchased a van which helps a lot, said the mother. Her two older sons, Jeff and Stevie, played orphan boys in the Enchanted Hills Playhouse production of “Oliver,” which took up three weeks in rehearsing. Jeff is also involved in 4-H and is showing rabbits at the Kosciusko County Fair. The twins, Julie and Stevie, were involved in competitive swimming and also in T-ball for most of the summer. Mrs. Schmahl also has another

If you weigh 130, what is it that can make you seem to weigh only 13 pounds? If you guessed being in water — you’re right! Water can let you experience a loss of 90 per cent of your weight, because of the lessening of the power of gravity. Swimming is a great way to stay fit. It’s one of the best physical exercises for people of

conditioning and stretching exercises to protect yourself from injury and discomfort. The pool doesn’t need to be especially big. One of the best exercises only takes waist-to-chest deep water. It’s called bobbing. To begin, take a deep breath. Raise your knees and let your body submerge until your feet are on the bottom. Exhale while you are under water. Push off the bottom and return to a standing position. If you have access to a larger pool, lap swimming is terrific exercise. After you've done your out-of-the-pool warm-ups, just get in the pool and take off, enjoy swimming until you feel winded. ( Ease off by loafing with a lazy breast or side stroke until you feel recovered, then go again. As you build your endurance, you’ll be able to increase the number of lengths you can do without stopping. Another way to begin a swimming fitness program is to swim one length of the pool, get out, walk back and repeat a number of times. An easy way to start exercising in the water is to jog in place. Stand with your arms bent in running position and jog in place, in the water.

Sue Gans and Randy Hickman) treat quite excellently what this reviewer thinks is music that has been underrated by the public in general. Karl Kochvar’s set is appropriate, as are Ann Buchen’s and Mindy Gilliland’s costumes. Mr. Kochvar also designed the lighting, which is starkly realistic, and Jean Siefert does props. Pulling it all together production-wise is tech director Brice Graham. Our advice is to see it, preferably borrowing a phrase from another reviewer, about another show) with someone you love. “Godspell" continues this week Wednesday through Friday at 8, and Saturday at 8:30 p.m. When the word gets around, seats are likely to be scarce.

son, David, aged five, and a twoyear old daughter, Carrie. Mrs. Schmahl does drive her children places for different things to do, however. She said, “we do find you have to get away for a change.” She has taken them to Indiana Dunes on Lake Michigan, to the Syracuse Public Library, to play miniature golf, to see movies and to the Enchanted Hills Playhouse. She said they like both the children’s shows as well as the regular musicals at the playhouse. One thing Mrs. Schmahl doesn’t like about the summer and keeping her kids entertained is the housework. She said, “I really enjoy the kid’s activities more.” But, the Syracuse mother also said, “this has been my best summer so far.” Even though she manages to keep her children busy, Mrs. Schmahl wishes she had some time to herself. “I would like to have a week off to just lay on the pier.” Well, cheer up, school starts August 31.
