Community Hands take county fair honors
The Community Hands 4-H Club at Syracuse took the following ribbons at the Kosciusko County fair last week: Beef, steers — Cross, Robyn Watkins, fourth in her class; Angus, Steve Hoopingarner, second in his class Breeding stock — Angus, Brian Roberts; first in junior yearling, third in summer yearling, first in senior calf, and reserve champion heifer; David Roberts, second in summer yearling. Seward budget up four cents The proposed 1978 budget of Seward Township is up four cents from the current rate. The proposed levies total 16 cents while the current rate is 12 cents. ' Trustee Robert Hoffman and members of the township advisory board will meet on August 30 to give final approval to said budget. The levy in the township fund has been set at six cents to raise $3,335 with the current rate being three cents. The levy in the fire fighting fund has been set at 10
cents to raise $5,216 with the current levy being nine cents. Claypool proposes increase in levies The budget for the town of Claypool appears elsewhere in this issue of The Mail-Journal and shown an increase in the proposed levies. The proposed rate is $4.78 to raise $17,594 for the operation of die town. The current levy is $2.25 and will raise $8,722 for payment of town bills. A hearing is set for 7 p m. on August 29 for final approval by the town board. The budget is signed by clerk-treasurer Quentin Evans.

John won champion Yorkshire barrow and went on to win reserve grand champion over all. The animal weighed 225 pounds and was , purchased by Chore-Time Equipment of Milford for $1 per pound at the livestock auction on Thursday night Lynn showed a February Yorkshire gilt and received the championship trophy in the breeding class. She then won grand champion gilt over all. John and Lynn were also awarded a clean pen swine trophy by the First National Bank of Milford. Lynn also won junior alternate construction on her beige jumpsuit at the annual fashion revue Monday evening. They are the children of Mr. and Mrs Richard Kaiser of r 2 Milford.

14 YEARS AGO, AUG. 15,1N3 Ted Davis, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Devon Davis of Milford, eriabited the grand champion steer at the county fair. “Big John,” a 1,013-pound Shorthorn was purchased by the Peoples State Bank of Leesburg for 84 cents per pound A chicken bar-b-q was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Merril Rink in Milford on Sunday. The dinner was in honor of the bir : thdays of Frank Rink and Teri Sue Rink of Milford and Mrs. Vera Swartzendruber of Middlebury. Horse show attracted large crowds of the Milford West Side park Sunday afternoon and evening in spite of sweltering heat that reached proportions of 100 degrees in the afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. John Method and son Jerry left early Sunday morning for a two-week's trip to California. They expected to reach St. Louis, Missouri, the first day out. SO YEARS AGO. AUG. 18,1917 An exchange gives this definition of an automobile. The automobile is a large iron and rubber contribance for transforming gasoline into speed, luxury, and obituaries. It consists of handsome leather upholstred carriage body mounted on fat rubber tired wheels and containing a gizzard full of machinery, suffering from various ailments. It has run over 1,000 miles and 10 thousand people. It can transport seven people from the front porch to the police station, the bankruptcy court or the golden gates in less time than any other method. A man in Jasper county by the name of Moon, got married and there was a change in the Moon. In due time his wife presented him with a daughter and that was a new Moon. Then be went to town and got drunk for joy — that ' was full Moon. When be started for home be had 25 cents in his pocket, that was the last quarter. His mother-in-law met him at the door with the rolling pin and there was a total eclipse of the Moon. Jackson's rate increases in '7B The Proposed budget for Jackson Township for 1978 shows an increase in the levy. The current rate 17 cents. The proposed rate is 28 cents. It would raise SB,BOI for the operation of the township in the coming year. Trustee Lucille Koontz and members of the township advisory board will meet on August 28 to consider the budget for a final time.
