Approaching decade — Syracuse Christian Schools teach old school's way, with Bible emphasis
Approaching nearly a decade of history in the Syracuse area are the Syracuse Christian Schools The schools are operated by the Grace Bible Church of Syracuse and began opening their doors to elementary students at the church annex, 518 South Main, in 1968. The board and congregation of the church began the school... “alarmed by the increasing anti-Christian teaching and permissiveness. Their objectives were to construct a school program of high academic standards, discipline and preparation for Christian service. In 1970. the old Hex School, northeast of Syracuse, was purchased and renovated, as vandals had caused some damage to the structure. The church and the school moved to this building after the Main Street property was disposed of in January 1971. The facility grew in 1972, as a modular building was moved in, and made ready for occupancy in 1972. Now the new building houses five units, used for the elementary school, and the old building is utilized for the high school. “We try to keep our academic standards high, said Rev. David R. Hartley, pastor of the church and educator. He said the school has had only two dropouts during its operation, and both were individuals who were not intellectually capable. Close to 80 per cent of the school's graduates have gone on to colleges for further study. And Rev. Haifley added, some are teaching at the schools presently or are doing other Christian work. Students of the schools bring their lunches and begin their day with a half-hour of chapel in the morning. The days are structured so there is more study time and less homework for the students. “Our school is a good bit like the ok! schools,’’ Haifley commented, as they were before John Dewey’s pragmatic theories influenced education. Every story at the school either has a moral or deals with science. Rev. Haifley commented. Discipline is imparted at an early age to children attending the school. The students stand to answer the instructors and do not

speak or get out of their seats without permission. “It teaches them respect for the teacher,” Rev. Haifley explained. Miss Debra Nyikos. the elementaryinstructor, said such procedures teach respect for anyone. “Kids like structure,’’ the pastor said, and it has been proven over and over at the school. The spankings are used only as a last resort, Rev. Hailfey said, in “extreme cases.” “We do have parents who are with you in this,” he commented. The difference between the

Christian school and public schools is not just the adding of the Bible, the pastor said. “Os course,” he said, “everything is taught with a Christian emphasis.” In the classes in Bible at the school, the students are taught the Bible is the center of everything. “We believe that the education of the person is the development of the character,” Rev. Haifley outlined. Once the character is established, the individual will make changes in his environment. rather than the en-
