that the eye is the window to the soul can be extended to include the body. A halo in the eye, known as corneal arcus — may be a clue to diseased coronary arteries, a condition which frequently leads to heart attack. The halo can be seen just by looking at your eyes. , Ophthalmologists, who are eye physicians and surgeons, can also assess the health of your blood vessels by looking into the eye with a combination flashlighttelescope known as an ophthalmoscope. This enables them to see tiny blood vessels in the retina at the back of the eye. Vessels which are narrow and yellow indicate vascular disease. Swollen blood vessels in the eye can be a clue to congestive heart failure. Tiny hemorrhages in the eye may reveal diabetes; if not treated, this can lead to permanent blindness. Eyes that bulge forward often indicate disease of the thyroid gland. Sometimes the bulge is so severe that the eyelids won't close, even during sleep. Furthermore, the ophthalmologist can identify signs in the eyes which reveal the presence of arthritis, and even the kind of arthritis in the body. For instance, children with rheumatoid arthritis often have opaque areas of the eye known as secondary cataract. Crohn’s Disease, which affects the small intestines, reveals itself in eyes which are reddened and when the iris is inflamed.
