David Petz new owner of DQ
David E. Petz, from North Liberty, is the new manager and owner of the Syracuse Dairy Queen. Petx bought the restaurant on July 7, and officially took over ownership as of August 1. The 27-year-oid former sales supervisor for Lake End Sales division of Scot Lad Foods said, “I had been looking for a business for sometime. I wasn't looking to buy a Dairy Queen. I just happened to run into it, so I thought I’d give it a try.” He said the deal happened almost overnight He said there were other buyers interested in the restaurant but he was the first. In preparation of taking over the Dairy Queen, Dave took a two-week course by the In-

ternational D Q Association in Minneapolis. He said this course is required for all managers and owners. One week was spent in learning operations, while the other was spent on financial management. No Major Changes The new owner said he isn’t anticipating any major changes in the operation of the business as of right now. He did say he is planning on keeping the Dairy Queen open all year round, shortening the hours during the winter. He also said he might have to close the business for two weeks during the winter for cleaning, however. Other changes Petz is considering are possibly opening for breakfast and changing some
items on the menu. “I’ve got a lot of things in mind, but it’s going to take some time,” added the new owner. Petz took over the ownership of the Dairy Queen from Cart and Becky Hepler, who owned the business for eight years. The Heplers enlarged the restaurant three years ago and added a seating area and Brazier foods. The Heplers decided to sell the establishment due to poor health and to take a much needed vacation. Petz worked as a sales supervisor with Lake End Sales for five years before buying the D Q. He was in their non-foods division and worked in the South Bend area. He has also worked as a meat cutter and car salesman, plus a variety of other jobs. Dave is single and is presently living in South Bend. He hopes to
be moving to the Syracuse area in the near future. Car destroyed by fire near North Webster A 1974 Camaro, owned by James Brennan, r 8 Huntington, was completely destroyed by fire on SR 13, three miles south of North Webster, at noon Sunday, July 31. Brennan was traveling north on 13 when he smelled smoke. He kept watching the hood of the car for flames, but noticed flames coming from the rear of the vehicle after hearing a noise. He then pulled to the side of the road and jumped out. North Webster and Pierceton firemen were called to the scene.
They extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes. Cause of the fire is unknown. Camera equipment valued at $5004600 plus a billfold containing S2OO in cash perished in the fire.
