Playhouse company talks of area life
By LESLIE WHITMAN The Enchanted Hills Playhouse in Syracuse is now in its sixth season A total of 19 actors makeup the cast of the playhouse this year, and many of them come from all over the United States to perform during the summer. Some of the actors gave these views about the playhouse and Syracuse as a whole: Kathy Gordon. 21, comes from Peoria, 111. She will be entering her senior year at Butler University in Indianapolis this fall majoring in drama. This is her first season at the playhouse, even though she did some other summer stock last year in Brunswick. Maine. Kathy said. “I’m enjoying the area. It s a real nice area to spend the summer having the lakes dose. " She also likes working in the summer stock atmosphere because of the experience. Kathy has performed in all of the shows put on ffy the playhouse this summer; as well as directing both of the children’s show. She will be graduating from Butler in December and hopes to continue working in the theatre. Likes Area. People Debby Shively, 31, from Mount Summit, says she really likes the area and the people. "I like the area. I wish we had more free time. We get really good responses from the people. I think its great Syracuse has a theatre.’’ Debby, who graduated from Ball State University in Muncie last February, with a degree in theatre, also likes the summer stock atmosphere “I really like it It's a lot of work, a lot of harder work than I’d thought l*d do, but it’s enjoyable. It’s given me insight as to what all goes into the production.” Most of the players in the company do other things with the production as well as perform

Apprentice Scott Whiteleather, 18, from Fort Wayne, is an apprentice for the playhouse this summer. This means he gets to perform, but doesn't get paid for it. There are three apprentices at the playhouse this summer. Scott, who played Charlie in the recent production of “Charlie’s Aunt,” also likes the area. “I like the lakes. It's a quiet area.” The main thing he doesn't like about Syracuse is that no places are open when the company is done for the night after a show. The apprentice also feels the audiences are very appreciative. “The audiences are really nice, very appreciative. The people get a chance to meet us. We get feedback." Scott said he feels like he is working with everyone else in the company and that he is learning all the time. He just graduated from high school and plans to attend the University of Evansville in the fall and major in music theatre. Oldest Member Os Company Daniel Buchen, 28, from Detroit, is the oldest member of the company this summer. This is his first year at the playhouse and in summer stock. This is also Daniel’s first try at performing musicals. “I feel more confident with straight drama. It's nice to have the opportunity to have experience.” Hot weather dangerous There's more danger in extremely hot weather than power outages, according to Dr. Robert Godley. chief medical resident at the Indiana University Medical Center It’s hazardous to your health. Health authorities are issuing warnings to persons with lung problems. Dr. Godley said those persons should not push themselves, activity wise, in the outdoors. during the spring meeting of the Indiana State Ski Club, she was being considered as a candidate. "I didn’t do anything,” she recalls. “I just sat back and hoped." "It was quite an honor, it really was,” Mrs. Miller said of her receipt of the award. She is the. only registered woman eligible to chief judge a ski tournament in the state and she conducted the tournament this past week end. She presently has her papers in committee to obtain her senior scoring certification. "My goal,” she explained, "if and when I get my senior scoring rating, my goal is to score a regional.” She and husband John both became interested in water skiing together. The first time

shows, but she doesn’t like summer stock as much because of the rushed time schedule. “I kind of find it frustrating. I like to work with an original design.” She wishes she had a six-week period to work with the costumes. She does like the area, however, especially after coming from Detroit. She said one morning she woke up and heard birds, where in Detroit, all she heard were sirens. Members of the company auditioned for the playhouse in Chicago in March. All of the company performs in each of the productions, as well as do other odd jobs. And, since it is summer stock, all of the company live dormitory style out at the playhouse. The 1977 season will end August 27. “Godspell” opens tonight and “Annie Get Your Gun” will open August 17.
Miller hopes the younger ones do learn to ski. “So, I think it’s going to be a family thing," their mother said. From mid-June to sometime in August, Mrs. Miller spends week ends at tournament sites all over Indiana. In her nine years involvement, she estimates she has worked a total of about 65 meets. She and husband John also judged a regional together last year. Also during this time, she has met the Japanese and Australian national water ski champions. The Australian, Bruce Cockburn, she adores. She has also met

some Canadian competitors. Mrs. Miller doesn’t believe she will tire of judging or scoring tournaments, because there’s always something new.; She described how new records are being set and new thicks developed, which were not dreamed of several years ago. But, maybe after the kids are grown, she might consider leaving it all behind. And there is the board of the Indiana State Ski Club. At this time, she is uncertain whether she would seek such a position, but on the otherhand, neither does she dismiss the idea, totally.
