Syracuse Little League 'just as good as ever'
Syracuse Little League is celebrating its 24th anniversary this year. And, according to Dan Caskey. director of the program, this year is just as good as ever. The Little League is made up of 14 teams in all. There are four major league teams, four minor league teams and six T-ball teams. Syracuse also has two travel teams and two girls’ softball teams. The Lions. Rotary, Pilcher’s and Bank are the names of teams in the major league. They practice fa* a total of two hours each week and play games on Mondays and Fridays starting at 5:30 p.m. The minor league sparks with such team names as Klink’s, Thornburg's, Tom Socks and Love Furniture. This league also practices two hours weekly and plays games on Tuesday nights at 5:30 p.m. Making up the T-ballers are the A s. Dodgers, Cubs, Rgds. Mets and the Sox. This league practices about an hour a week and plays on Thursday nights at Vega Field beginning at 6 p.m. AH the teams in the major and minor league play in the baseball field next to Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church located on SR 13 North, also know as the Rotary Field. The girls' softball teams are called the Lakeland Swingers. They play every Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. The Syracuse travel teams play on Wednesday nights starting at 6 p.m. | Caskey said that 170 boys and 46 girls are participating in the Little League program this year. Kindergarten through second grade play in the T-Ball league; third and fourth grade in the minor league; and fifth and sixth grade play in the major league Funding from the program comes from the county recreation program, said Caskey and varies in amount from year to year. A total of $1,500 was raised fa* the program in a Chicken Bar-B-Q held on July 4. I Caskey said the first week in August will be the last week of play for the league. Tournaments will be held that week and awards given out. Batting awards will be given out for the major and minor league and all players in the T-ball league will receive a ribbon. A “Mr. Hustle” award will also be given out. This goes to the player who shows the most cooperation throughout the season. Caskey Directs This is the fifth year Caskey has served as director of the program. He has been involved in softball in Syracuse even longer, he played in the first baseball team in 1953. His duties as director include Wawasee low in standings The Wawasee High School baseball team finished near the bottom in the Northern Lakes Conference summer standings. teaching baseball to the kids from 9 a.m.-l p.m., Monday through Thursday and being at all the games from 4-8 p.m. every night. He is also in charge of scheduling the teams and releasing game times to the media. “We have a good bunch of kids and parents.” Caskey emphasized that the league is a recreational program and not an all-star one. “Every child regardless of ability gets to ptey.” He did say that sane kids get more involved than others. “Some kids would spend 12 hours a day down there. There are others we have to drag to the games.” i He also mentioned that the better players get to play more, mainly because they are the ones that come to practice and put their effort into it. Philosophy Caskey has a special philosophy about Little League. He said, “if you can’t learn something from playing the game, it’s not worthwhile.” He believes the kids should be learning more than just bow to play baseball. He said he tries to teach them right and wrong and to build some character. “You should teach something they are going to learn later in life. All aren’t gong to play baseball.” The director also feels that the Syracuse league is just as good as the other towns. “Year in and year out, we’re just as good as anyone.” /5 lAilfor I / Summer I Following are Little League batting statistics as released on Monday of this week: Batting average —.
