On May 11, the First Baptist Church of Oswego changed its name to the Lakeland Community Church. Rev. Robert Chidister, pastor, said the reason for the change is to promote the relationship with Christ, as opposed to Baptism. “We have done an extensive survey and found that many, many people are really turned off by denominationalism. We want to promote a Christian outreach in the community,” he explained. At the present time, Rev. Chidister is doing a pilot program, which will determine the needs of the community. Deacons and other members of the congregation will undertake a more extensive survey later, which is hoped to be completed before next year. “It’s coming along pretty good,” Rev. Chidister commented. From the preliminary work, he has found people who move into the community are not concerned with the denomination. “New people moving to a community are looking to a church to meet their needs.” After the house-to-house survey is completed, the

results will be used to establish the church programs and missions. “We hope to be able to present to our congregation and the community a church that has a sympathetic heart and away to solve their problems,” Rev. Chidister stated. “It is more important for you to have a proper relationship with Christ than be a Baptist,” outlined the pastor. He added the church will remain an American Baptist church in spirit, but not in name. Rev. Chidister says with the name change, the church hopes to reach more people in the lakeland communities. These communities include Syracuse, North Webster and Warsaw. Next year the church will celebrate the 140th anniversary, having been built in 1838.
