TROOPER JACK TIP OF THE WEEK It’s the law: Any eight sided traffic sign you see means stop. No defensive driver ever ignores them Come to a dead stop. A slow roll is not good enough and even if you’ve stopped behind other cars, you must again stop when your vehicle reaches the stop sign. ! Wouldn’t it be nice to be as sure of anything as some people are of everything? b A person is old only when he shuts his mind and stops learning.

1 YEAR AGO, JULY 14,1976 Judge Robert A. Grant of South Bend is a man who likes to “see for himself” before rendering a decision. And this is what he did Tuesday morning when he visited the controversial “wetlands” on two sites bordering Lake Wawasee. Members of the board of directors of the State Bank of Syracuse voted M. D. (Mike) Umbaugh as a new director at their regular meeting held last week. Umbaugh fills the vacancy created by the recent resignation of director Thomas M. Tuttle. The Syracuse-Wawasee Garden Club will present a 17761976 Bicentennial flower show with the theme “Let Freedom Ring,” at Wawasee high school on August 5 and 6. Mrs. Floyd (Thelma) Gingerich of Front Street, Syracuse, caught a one pound bluegill Sunday while fishing in Syracuse Lake near the Gingerich home. The Friendly Neighbors club erf Syracuse honored charter member Rosa Dell Swihart Glick this month in observance of her 90th birthday anniversary. If you thought you saw a raccoon drinking from the Main Street water fountain Monday, you did. Riding on the shoulder <rf a young chap with a head band, the animal seemed quite refreshed. The “new face at town hall replacing Dorothy Austin who recently married, is Lake Wawasee resident Vella Baumbaugh. 19 YEARS AGO. JULY 12,1967 The State Bank of Syracuse is a real tough one to break into! Assistant cashier James Fry found that out when he went to work this morning and found the front door lock jammed. Undaunted, he got a ladder and broke a restroom window on the south side of the building to gain entrance Then he found he couldn’t get the front door unlocked from the inside. With the aid of a locksmith, the bank finally opened at 9:30 —a half hour late. Greg Bouser, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bouser of r 3 Syracuse, has recently enlisted in the United States Army Don't be surprised if you hear in the near future that the Syracuse Baptist church has changed its name. Under consideration is this name: Wawasee Heights Baptist church. The church is to begin soon to erect its new 9,500 square foot church on the SyracuseNorth Webster road just across from the new Wawasee high school.
