Soybean stocks smallest in 4 years: wheat carryover largest since 1963

June 1 stocks of soybeans at 9.1 million metric tons were 40 per cent below a year earlier, and the smallest since 1973, according to the crop reporting board. Increases from a year earlier for individual feed grains were 26 per cent for com and 27 per cent for sorghum. Barley was down two per cent and oats down 19 per cent. Corn in all storage positions on June 1, totaled 2,351 million bushels, 26 per cent above a year earlier and 58 per cent above June 1,1975. Farm stocks totaled 1,564 million bushels and off-farm stocks were 787 million bushels. Disappearance from all storage positions during April and May was 923 million bushels down four per cent from the same period of 1976. Sorghum grain in all storage positions June 1 totaled 196 millinn bushels, 27 pw cent more than a year earlier and 50 per. cent above the same date in 1975. Farm stocks totaled 61 million bushels and off-farm holdings were 135 million bushels, up 23 and 30 per cent, respectively,

Farm stocks totaled 132 million bushels and off-farm stocks wore nearly 36 million bushels. Disappearance from all storage positions during April and May 1977 was 96 million bushels, downi 16 per cent from the same period last year. Farm stocks are based on mail responses from approximately 23,000 producers and personal interviews with farm operators residing in approximately 16,000 land areas who report total quantity located on their farming operation regardless of ownership. Off-farm stocks are based on reports from grain storage facilities that account for about 85 per cent of the total off-farm storage capacity.
