Shop has assisted community for decade

For over a decade, there has been a thrift shop in North Webster, with an affiliation of the United Methodist Church. Presently, the thrift shop is known as The King's Exchange, located west of the stoplight in North Webster. Following a reorganization in 1972, the shop was moved into the old parish of the church on May 1. A new working system was created for the shop and consignments were taken. But the beginnings of the shop were in 1966, when a Methodist Thrift Shop was begun in the Midlakes Shopping Center by the Goodwill Builder’s class of the church, at Charles Sponseller’s suggestion, □ass volunteers staffed the shop, which carried donations of various items. The store was later relocated on Epworth Forest Road. “We operated with just volunteer help." explained Mrs. Marianne Watson, treasurer, "and it proved to be such a good thing, we had no idea it would grow to these proportions. The Women’s Society of the church has operated the shop since 1972. ‘‘They’re all very willing to give," says current shop manager Mrs. Mary Lou Ensfield. Mostly the same ladies staff the shop, with a reserve list of volunteers <Qr emergencies. The donated items and consignments are arranged in separate rooms of the house, with others of their kind. Kit* chen utensils, sewing notions, clothing and accessories make up the selection, along with some books. ‘‘Right now," Mrs. Ensfield said, ‘‘we need more room." People have been coming in buying items for getting their children ready for school, Mrs. Ensfield said. The

b H A DECADE OF SERVICE — The King’s Exchange, a thrift shop for the United Methodist Church, North Webster, has completed a decade of service to the church and community.

customers may use a layaway plan made available. “We do feel it is a wonderful service to the community for people who might not be able to have wearable clothing said Mrs. Watson. It also serves as an outlet for people to get a return on their clothing investment, she added. In a five-year period from 1972 to 1977, $17,000 has been raised by the shop for church projects. Since the beginning of the shop, the proceeds have gone to the building fund, youth projects and to assist those not as fortunate. MORE ROOM NEEDED — Mary Lou Ensfield, manager of The King’s Exchange, explains donations exceed the available display space.
